We usually don’t think about the wonderful service fossil fuels provide in terms of being a store of heat energy for winter, the time when there is a greater need for heat energy. Figure 1 shows dramatically how, in the US, the residential usage of heating fuels spikes during the winter months.
Solar energy is most abundantly available in the May-June-July period, making it a poor candidate for fixing the problem of the need for winter heat.
In some ways, the lack of availability of fuels for winter is a canary in the coal mine regarding future energy shortages. People have been concerned about oil shortages, but winter fuel shortages are, in many ways, just as bad. They can result in people “freezing in the dark.”
In this post, I will look at some of the issues involved.
[1] Batteries are suitable for fine-tuning the precise time during a 24-hour period solar electricity is used. They cannot be scaled up to store solar energy from summer to winter.
In today’s world, batteries can be used to delay the use of solar electricity for at most a few hours. In exceptional situations, perhaps the holding period can be increased to a few days.
California is known both for its high level of battery storage and its high level of renewables. These renewables include both solar and wind energy, plus smaller amounts of electricity generated in geothermal plants and electricity generated by burning biomass. The problem encountered is that the electricity generated by solar panels tends to start and end too early in the day, relative to when citizens want to use this electricity. After citizens return home after work, they would like to cook their dinners and use their air conditioning, leading to considerable demand after the sun sets.
Figure 3 illustrates how batteries in combination with hydroelectric generation (hydro) are used to save electricity generation from early in the day for use in the evening hours. While battery use is suitable for fine tuning exactly when, during a 24-hour period, solar energy will be used, the quantity of batteries cannot be ramped up sufficiently to save electricity from summer to winter. The world would run out of battery-making materials, if nothing else.
[2] Ramping up hydro is not a solution to our problem of inadequate energy for heat in winter.
One problem is that, in long-industrialized economies, hydro capabilities were built out years ago.
It is difficult to believe that much more buildout is available in these countries.
Another issue is that hydro tends to be quite variable from year to year, even over an area as large as the United States, as shown in Figure 4 above. When the variability is viewed over a smaller area, the year-to-year variability is even higher, as illustrated in Figure 5 below.
The pattern shown reflects peak generation in the spring, when the ice pack is melting. Low generation generally occurs during the winter, when the ice pack is frozen. Thus, hydro tends not be helpful for raising winter energy supplies. A similar pattern tends to happen in other temperate areas.
A third issue is that variability in hydro supply is already causing problems. Norway has recently reported that it may need to limit hydro exports in coming months because water reservoirs are low. Norway’s exports of electricity are used to help balance Europe’s wind and solar electricity. Thus, this issue may lead to yet another energy problem for Europe.
As another example, China reports a severe power crunch in its Sichuan Province, related to low rainfall and high temperatures. Fossil fuel generation is not available to fill the gap.
[3] Wind energy is not a greatly better than hydro and solar, in terms of variability and poor timing of supply.
For example, Europe experienced a power crunch in the third quarter of 2021 related to weak winds. Europe’s largest wind producers (Britain, Germany and France) produced only 14% of their rated capacity during this period, compared with an average of 20% to 26% in previous years. No one had planned for this kind of three-month shortfall.
In 2021, China experienced dry, windless weather, resulting in both its generation from wind and hydro being low. The country found it needed to use rolling blackouts to deal with the situation. This led to traffic lights failing and many families needing to eat candle-lit dinners.
Even viewed on a nationwide basis, US wind generation varies considerably from month to month.
US total wind electricity generation tends to be highest in April or May. This can cause oversupply issues because hydro generation tends to be high about the same time. The demand for electricity tends to be low because of generally mild weather. The result is that even at today’s renewable levels, a wet, windy spring can lead to a situation in which the combination of hydro and wind electricity supply exceeds total local demand for electricity.
[4] As more wind and solar are added to the grid, the challenges and costs become increasingly great.
There are a huge number of technical problems associated with trying to add a large amount of wind and solar energy to the grid. Some of them are outlined in Figure 7.
One of the issues is torque distortion, especially related to wind energy.
There are also many other issues, including some outlined on this Drax website. Wind and solar provide no “inertia” to the system. This makes me wonder whether the grid could even function without a substantial amount of fossil fuel or nuclear generation providing sufficient inertia.
Furthermore, wind and solar tend to make voltage fluctuate, necessitating systems to absorb and discharge something called “reactive power.”
[5] The word “sustainable” has created unrealistic expectations with respect to intermittent wind and solar electricity.
A person in the wind turbine repair industry once told me, “Wind turbines run on a steady supply of replacement parts.” Individual parts may be made to last 20-years, or even longer, but there are so many parts that some are likely to need replacement long before that time. An article in Windpower Engineering says, “Turbine gearboxes are typically given a design life of 20 years, but few make it past the 10-year mark.”
There is also the problem of wind damage, especially in the case of a severe storm.
Furthermore, the operational lives for fossil fuel and nuclear generating plants are typically much longer than those for wind and solar. In the US, some nuclear plants have licenses to operate for 60 years. Efforts are underway to extend some licenses to 80 years.
With the short life spans for wind and solar, constant rebuilding of wind turbines and solar generation is necessary, using fossil fuels. Between the rebuilding issue and the need for fossil fuels to maintain the electric grid, the output of wind turbines and solar panels cannot be expected to last any longer than fossil fuel supply.
[6] Energy modeling has led to unrealistic expectations for wind and solar.
Energy models don’t take into account all of the many adjustments to the transmission system that are needed to support wind and solar, and the resulting added costs. Besides the direct cost of the extra transmission required, there is an ongoing need to inspect parts for signs of wear. Brush around the transmission lines also needs to be cut back. If adequate maintenance is not performed, transmission lines can cause fires. Burying transmission lines is sometimes an option, but doing so is expensive, both in energy use and cost.
Energy models also don’t take into account the way wind turbines and solar panels perform in “real life.” In particular, most researchers miss the point that electricity from solar panels cannot be expected to be very helpful for meeting our need for heat energy in winter. If we want to add more summer air conditioning, solar panels can “sort of” support this effort, especially if batteries are also added to help fine tune when, during the 24-hour day, the solar electricity will be utilized. Unfortunately, we don’t have any realistic way of saving the output of solar panels from summer to winter.
It seems to me that supporting air conditioning is a rather frivolous use for what seems to be a dwindling quantity of available energy supply. In my opinion, our first two priorities should be adequate food supply and preventing freezing in the dark in winter. Solar, especially, does nothing for these issues. Wind can be used to pump water for crops and animals. In fact, an ordinary windmill, built 100 years ago, can also be used to provide this type of service.
Because of the intermittency issue, especially the “summer to winter” intermittency issue, wind and solar are not truly replacements for electricity produced by fossil fuels or nuclear. The problem is that most of the current system needs to remain in place, in addition to the renewable energy system. When researchers make cost comparisons, they should be comparing the cost of the intermittent energy, including necessary batteries and grid enhancements with the cost of the fuel saved by operating these devices.
[7] Competitive pricing plans that enable the growth of wind and solar electricity are part of what is pushing a number of areas in the world toward a “freezing-in-the-dark” problem.
In the early days of electricity production, “utility pricing” was generally used. With this approach, vertical integration of electricity supply was encouraged. A utility would make long term contracts with a number of providers and would set prices for customers based on the expected long-term cost of electricity production and distribution. The utility would make certain that transmission lines were properly repaired and would add new generation as needed.
Energy prices of all kinds spiked in the late 1970s. Not long afterward, in an attempt to prevent high electricity prices from causing inflation, a shift in pricing arrangements started taking place. More competition was encouraged, with the new approach called competitive pricing. Vertically integrated groups were broken up. Wholesale electricity prices started varying by time of day, based on which providers were willing to sell their production at the lowest price, for that particular time period. This approach encouraged providers to neglect maintaining their power lines and stop adding more storage capacity. Any kind of overhead expense was discouraged.
In fact, under this arrangement, wind and solar were also given the privilege of “going first.” If too much energy in total was produced, negative rates could result for other providers. This approach was especially harmful for nuclear energy. Nuclear power plants found that their overall price structure was too low. They sometimes closed because of inadequate profitability. New investments in nuclear energy were discouraged, as was proper maintenance. This effect has been especially noticeable in Europe.
The result is that about a third of the gain from wind and solar energy has been offset by the decline in nuclear electricity generation. Of course, nuclear is another low-carbon form of electricity. It is a great deal more reliable than wind or solar. It can even help prevent freezing in the dark because it is likely to be available in winter, when more electricity for heating is likely to be needed.
Another issue is that competitive pricing discouraged the building of adequate storage facilities for natural gas. Also, it tended to discourage purchasing natural gas under long term contracts. The thinking went, “Rather than building storage, why not wait until the natural gas is needed, and then purchase it at the market rate?”
Unfortunately, producing natural gas requires long-term investments. Companies producing natural gas operate wells that produce approximately equal amounts year-round. The same pattern of high winter-consumption of natural gas tends to occur almost simultaneously in many Northern Hemisphere areas with cold winters. If the system is going to work, customers need to be purchasing natural gas, year-round, and stowing it away for winter.
Natural gas production has been falling in Europe, as has coal production (not shown), necessitating more imports of replacement fuel, often natural gas.
With competitive rating and LNG ships seeming to sell natural gas on an “as needed” basis, there has been a tendency in Europe to overlook the need for long term contracts and additional storage to go with rising natural gas imports. Now, Europe is starting to discover the folly of this approach. Solar is close to worthless for providing electricity in winter; wind cannot be relied upon. It doesn’t ramp up nearly quickly enough, in any reasonable timeframe. The danger is that countries will risk having their citizens freeze in the dark because of inadequate natural gas import availability.
[8] The world is a very long way from producing enough wind and solar to solve its energy problems, especially its need for heat in winter.
The energy supply that the world uses includes much more than electricity. It contains oil and fuels burned directly, such as natural gas. The percentage share of this total energy supply that wind and solar output provides depends on how it is counted. The International Energy Agency treats wind and solar as if they only replace fuel, rather than replacing dispatchable electricity.
On this basis, the share of total energy provided by the Wind and Solar category is very low, only 2.2% for the world as a whole. Germany comes out highest of the groups analyzed, but even it is replacing only 6.0% of its total energy consumed. It is difficult to imagine how the land and water around Germany could tolerate wind turbines and solar panels being ramped up sufficiently to cover such a shortfall. Other parts of the world are even farther from replacing current energy supplies with wind and solar.
Clearly, we cannot expect wind and solar to ever be ramped up to meet our energy needs, even in combination with hydro.

My suburban city council in the Los Angeles suburbs voted this week to lease a fleet of Teslas to make our police department an all-EV agency. As soon as they can get it done — which won’t be soon soon, but ASAP in government time — the South Pasadena Police Department will only have electric vehicles for patrol officers, administrators, and detectives.

I still come across people online who believe that they are being targeted by the spooks via some kind of non-ionizing radiation that makes them ill. It is one of those “extraordinary” claims that requires a bit more evidence than just the assertion it is happening.
But it isn’t extraordinary in the sense that magic and miracles and invisible dragons in the garage that breath room-temperature fire are extraordinary. The technology exists to do this sort of thing. There are energy beam weapons used for crowd control that make it too hot or uncomfortable for people to remain in the beam. And there are those people who got sick while working at the US embassy in Havana, allegedly due to something similar.
As for mind control, ordinary propaganda and peer pressure and the threat of ostracism and loss of income works pretty well for about 90% of off people. They not only do what they are told todo; they also think what they are told to think. Thought control over the other 10% is probably a challenge that is being pursued these days in ways that we can only guess at.

Thanks, Jane! This video was only released this month. I think it’s a valuable contribution to giving us a perspective on what’s been going on and bringing to our attention some of the events that we may not have known about or had forgotten the details of.
There is some speculative stuff in there that people can take or leave, but also a clear timeline of events and some very good interviews with concerned professionals in several relevant fields. I was particularly impressed by the one with the late virologist Luc Montagnier, who doesn’t say everyone who was jabbed is going to die horribly, but he certainly is suspicious of what is in the shots and he gives a stark warning to people not to get jabbed.

IMO there is a high probability the deep state will assassinate Joe Biden in the next five weeks. All debate about any issue would be quashed. All opposition can be characterized as murderers. I must say upon first reading Orwells 1984 many decades ago I found the idea of “doublethink” to be farfetched but I am reluctantly beginning to wonder if by some strange occurrence it was accurate. As Winston said I think “freedom is the freedom to say 2+2=4” thus denying the principle of doublethink. Doublethink actually has a logic of sort. If two contradictory statements can be held as truth at the same time than a malleability of representation that language is is created.
I dont think these statements cause any cognitive dissonance in Biden and I wonder if this is yet another training of humans about what is desirable in a good citizen. Norman do you agree? A skill set demonstrated? I duly note the same technique being applied to the new labels of what is suddenly considered the enemy both foreign and domestic. What is consistent is the vagueness created by the contradictory statements allowing all actions to be appropriate. The suddenness and outrageousness of the change is muted by its broad application. Its actually not all that sudden. The arbitrary and false accusations leveled at Trump now becoming applicable on a much wider scale could perhaps be regarded as sudden. The fact that Trump was investigated on slanderous untrue statements while possible genuine crimes such as his interaction with Jeffry Epstein or his rushing the injections through a sham approval and pressure on the EU to do the same are ignored and fit the teaching to a T. I know you’ll think I’m crazy, but from my perspective as a “retired” orthopedic surgeon, the most plausible denial for Biden’s “death” would be a Joan River’s style of iatrogenic death or complication from what was supposedly minor surgery. The simple MO: push Biden down the stairs, cause a high probability type injury seen in the elderly who fall: broken hip, broken wrist, broken shoulder, or closed head injury (CHI), admit him to the hospital where he would die from a pulmonary embolism, intracerebral or extradural bleed, etc. The treachery, the deception, and the psychopathy clearly demonstrated by those who would control us has become so florid that even this would no longer be out of the realm of possibility.

What I have found is I agree with your professional examination of the facts. However you do still have to aspire in life against all the odds, you don’t just give in easily do you?
Well II beg to differ as I have one of the largest infrastructure projects involved in our western liberal energy/industrial/agriculture strategy at least several decades in advanced construction with planning for more until 2035! Available coal supply in the UK, and in fact, in most of Europe has already been used. We will have to see how things work out. Our current economy depends on a whole portfolio of different types of products made from fossil fuels besides electricity. We need lubricants made from oil, and fertilizer made using natural gas or coal. A lot of direct heat is with natural gas. Switching to all electricity would not be easy.

The growth in electric car ownership could strain power grids if most drivers continue charging primarily at home overnight. Investment in daytime charging options will be crucial to help the western US power grid handle the demand with an estimated 50 per cent of drivers using electric vehicles by 2035.
That finding comes from computer models looking at how driver charging behaviours and available charging station infrastructure at home and in public places could impact peak net electricity demand – the highest electrical power demand minus power provided by solar and wind power.
If drivers primarily charge vehicles at home during the night, that could lead to a 25 per cent surge in peak net electricity demand when states reach 50 per cent electric vehicle ownership, and possibly surpass grid capacity at even higher levels of ownership. But expanding daytime charging opportunities could reduce that increase in peak net electricity demand to just 7.5 per cent and help reduce the costs of expanding grid capacity.

Ahead of NASA’s second attempt of its Artemis I moon rocket launch on Saturday, astronaut Thomas Pesquet is slamming conspiracy theorists who claim the original moon landing never happened to begin with.
Pesquet — a member of the European Union Space Agency who has been to space four times — went off in a series of tweets on Wednesday, shaming disbelievers who recently revisited claims that NASA’s Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin actually filmed their Apollo 11 moon landing in a movie studio in 1969
The other five landings weren’t immune from skepticism either.
“But why do we have to waste precious time on this again: of course yes, humans went to the moon during the Apollo missions. And we’re going back,” he said, translated from French.

If humans’ big need is adequate heat in winter, perhaps Global Warming isn’t all bad. Population has always moved to habitable areas. People did not die off completely, even in ice ages. Political leaders need some sort of concern that supposedly tops all others. One of them now is climate change. Another is communicable diseases. I suppose a third is “Russia: Bad.”
Too much population in total is the big issue, but it is difficult to discuss this issue. The economy cannot afford to support the many who are not contributing adequately today. In fact, it is not clear that it can support very many in total. We lack the skills and the supply of draft animals needed to get along without fossil fuels.
Also, I expect that the big problem in the future will be complete unavailability of some things, for some periods of time. People who have modeled the future have assumed that fossil fuels will always be available, but at high prices. They also assume that electricity will always be available, perhaps at high prices. Without these things, the economy tends to stop. We can’t get sufficient food and fresh water. People tend to die off, from disease if nothing else, if food supplies are inadequate.
This clarity is so welcome! It’s problematic getting it on Facebook, but it needs to go somewhere where it’s easy to see.
We need to deal with a large die-off of humans. I believe that preparing for that is, ironically, the same as figuring out how to live a little longer.
The problem is that such heating happens a little bit too slowly to be able to counteract an energy crisis. Plus, that heating has other impacts which I think should be fairly clear at this point. So maybe not all bad but overall bad.

The most recent report covers Q1 22….the report for Q2 22 should be published by the end of this month. Here’s a few interesting details from the Q1 22 report:
-UK was a net importer of crude oil by 3.4 million tonnes
-North Sea production has been hampered by delayed maintenance due to covid
-At the end of Q1 22, UK held stocks of 9.6 million tonnes of crude/oil products
-LNG imports up by almost 50%, while gas exports more than doubled….looks like
the UK is processing the LNG then piping it to mainland Europe
-Renewables accounted for 45.5% of electricity generation
-Renewables + nuclear accounted for 60.4% of electricity generation
-Installed renewables capacity increased by 3.1GW
-Electricity generated from fossil fuels fell by 12%
(All increases/decreases are year on year)
These “renewables” majorly include burning of wood pellets from the U.S. South—yet another contradiction of the “renewable” narrative.
I know….but…. if burning overseas wood can be rebranded as biomass energy….surely coal can be rebranded as bio-something and given a nice greenwashed narrative?
Carbon sequestration is the gimmick for making coal green. Of course, you have to burn a whole lot more coal, for the process to work. Also, it is unlikely that the CO2 will stay underground. It is not clear that you are any ahead in the long term, in terms of CO2. But it is possible to burn the coal a whole lot more quickly.
That sounds promising…..
We can rebrand the remaining UK coal fired power stations as…Carbon Sequestration Plants (CSPs)….

I’ve been using solar cooking devices for food processing here in London for a dozen or so years. Got to have a sense of humour of course but with clear skies and direct beam solar radiation you can do quite a lot. It can be up to 1kw per m2 at the ground, with high reflectance at the collector and high absorption at the target pot in a suitable greenhouse enclosure that can be a pretty good conversion and better efficiency than a PV panel and all that stuff. Main obstacle to uptake is that people can’t be bothered, but also nobody has heard of it really or seen anything of it in practise. Since the main demand on the grid is around teatime at 6pm, cooking earlier , slowly and using food as a ‘battery’ could contribute to smoothing peak demand a little. It’s very easy to make a parabolic dish reflector from an old satellite dish, but dangerous since the focus is far out of the shallow parabola. It can burn flesh easily. Also if unattended , the focus will wander far, so don’t park your lpg delivery van nearby. Or your Tesla. There is a little bit to learn about solar cooking ( if interested, most aren’t as it’s not exactly BAU – you have to plan ahead a little). Here’s a good but ropey website from the U.K. which will tell you about , box cookers, panel cookers and parabolic cookers. Along with integrated cooking.

Watching a pot for many hours of the day is not necessary. Same as with a slow cooker for a low power (eg panel cooker) unit, it won’t burn. So you can do other stuff, or sleep, if you use a para later or evacuated tube solar cooker it cooks faster. With clear skies it can be similar to a hob, with the right unit. Odeillo In the Pyrennes, I met the chief engineer there, it is not a domestic scale solar cooker.
Heat I believe to be the topic of the post, yes. If I had a solar cooker and a pile of wood , and somebody else had just a pile of wood. Whose pile would last longer? Also, when landing on the sun, is it best to go during daytime or at nightime, to avoid harmful burns?

World War I and II made the US the leading economy. Now people can sense war is coming. That is why the dollar is rising. Capital flows are flowing our of Europe. Europe will eventually collapse. Using the same interest rates for all of the countries in the EU cannot work. Collapse is ahead.
I have been saying something like this for years. Those who are controlling the direction of how the world works have more money than they can possibily spend. Many make a million dollars A DAY! They can buy people like buying a coffee.
At this level it becomes clear that money is worthless without things to buy and the only things to buy that matters is access to and control of the planets finite resources.
What almost everyone misses wrt analysis of world events is how much of the US foreign policy and actions are about Demand Destruction to keep people from using up those finite resources.
The other thing that is finite is the biospheres ability to absorb humanity’s waste stream. We are poisoning the environment in a hundred different ways killing ourselves and all other life with us. Just one more reason for massive Demand Destruction or as OFW calls it UEP!
There were no plastic bottles in Germany when I was young. It was around the 80s that a discussion about plastic bottles came up. A lot of people argued that it will be bad for the environment. At least a bottle-deposit fee should have been introduced.
What we got was a voluntary self commitment for plastic recycling. Well, now we see where that brought us.
Who actually created THE PROBLEM (in parts at least besides the consumers) and who HAS “THE SOLUTION”.
I mean Germany now has a bottle deposit for plastic bottles but the rest of the world has not.

Plastic bottles are cheap to make; recycling old ones is not. It is possible to legislate solutions that make no sense economically.
More laws always make sense because some people need to be elected so that we can have even more laws.
Cleaning glass bottles also takes quite some resources but in the long run is more effective than plastic bottles if you calculate the overall damage.
The bottles were just an example how a problem was “deliberately” created so that the people can later accept that UEP is the best solution to human existence.

A 22-year-old Idaho man died Saturday while running in the St. George Marathon.
Hayden Holman, of Sugar City, collapsed near the end of the 26-mile race. He stopped breathing and his heart stopped beating, according to St. George police. First responders were able to revive him, but Holman died shortly after he was taken to a hospital.
According to the East Idaho News, Holman was attending Brigham Young University-Idaho, and he married his wife, Charlotte, in February.
Holman’s cause of death is undetermined. An autopsy will be performed.
As of Monday morning, a GoFundMe page set up to help Charlotte Holman with medical and funeral expenses had raised four times its $3,000 goal.

Im afraid any logical analysis at this point points to the conclusion that world war is far more probable than not. My impression is that the third world war could be highly probable only if Israel pushed its aggressive activities against Iran and, at the same time, if US pushed its aggressive activities against China, supporting Taiwan.
Because at the moment my impression is that Iran and China would not be so happy to stay with Russia for a third world war.

From the perspective of what I hold to be moral leaders who characterize opposition as “hitler” are very undesirable and leaders who practice tolerance and look for solutions are very desirable. Because of this I am extremely suspicious of leaders who use stereotypes rather than to talk about their own actions and the solutions they propose. Saddam was a “Hitler”. Qaddafi was a “Hitler”. The reality is applying the “Hitler” label is a a justification of war with the side purpose of justifying the execution of the leader given the label usually under circumstances that would fill the most sadistic of the nazi party with glee. Just to be clear. Saddam actions and behavior in the abuse of his people certainly warranted condemnation but its actions and crimes that should be considered not a hit order. Qaddafi’s hit was a travesty but from the standards of individuals being judged on their actions both hits were unconscionable. Serious questions have to be asked if a representive democracy has any business starting wars ostensiably to carry out hits on those it uses propaganda to characterize as Hitler.
