Ramping Up Renewables Can’t Provide Enough Heat Energy in Winter

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

We usually don’t think about the wonderful service fossil fuels provide in terms of being a store of heat energy for winter, the time when there is a greater need for heat energy. Figure 1 shows dramatically how, in the US, the residential usage of heating fuels spikes during the winter months.

Figure 1. US residential use of energy, based on EIA data. The category “Natural Gas, etc.” includes all fuels bought directly by households and burned. This is primarily natural gas, but also includes small amounts of propane and diesel burned as heating oil. Wood chips or other commercial wood purchased to be burned is also in this category.

Solar energy is most abundantly available in the May-June-July period, making it a poor candidate for fixing the problem of the need for winter heat.

Figure 2. California solar electricity production by month through June 30, 2022, based on EIA data. Amounts are for utility scale and small scale solar combined.

In some ways, the lack of availability of fuels for winter is a canary in the coal mine regarding future energy shortages. People have been concerned about oil shortages, but winter fuel shortages are, in many ways, just as bad. They can result in people “freezing in the dark.”

In this post, I will look at some of the issues involved.

[1] Batteries are suitable for fine-tuning the precise time during a 24-hour period solar electricity is used. They cannot be scaled up to store solar energy from summer to winter.

In today’s world, batteries can be used to delay the use of solar electricity for at most a few hours. In exceptional situations, perhaps the holding period can be increased to a few days.

California is known both for its high level of battery storage and its high level of renewables. These renewables include both solar and wind energy, plus smaller amounts of electricity generated in geothermal plants and electricity generated by burning biomass. The problem encountered is that the electricity generated by solar panels tends to start and end too early in the day, relative to when citizens want to use this electricity. After citizens return home after work, they would like to cook their dinners and use their air conditioning, leading to considerable demand after the sun sets.

Figure 3. Illustration by Inside Climate News showing the combination of resources utilized during July 9, 2022, which was a day of peak electricity consumption. Imports refer to electricity purchased from outside the State of California.

Figure 3 illustrates how batteries in combination with hydroelectric generation (hydro) are used to save electricity generation from early in the day for use in the evening hours. While battery use is suitable for fine tuning exactly when, during a 24-hour period, solar energy will be used, the quantity of batteries cannot be ramped up sufficiently to save electricity from summer to winter. The world would run out of battery-making materials, if nothing else.

[2] Ramping up hydro is not a solution to our problem of inadequate energy for heat in winter.

One problem is that, in long-industrialized economies, hydro capabilities were built out years ago.

Figure 4. Annual hydro generation based on data of BP’s 2022 Statistical Review of World Energy.

It is difficult to believe that much more buildout is available in these countries.

Another issue is that hydro tends to be quite variable from year to year, even over an area as large as the United States, as shown in Figure 4 above. When the variability is viewed over a smaller area, the year-to-year variability is even higher, as illustrated in Figure 5 below.

Figure 5. Monthly California hydroelectric generation through June 30, 2022, based on EIA data.

The pattern shown reflects peak generation in the spring, when the ice pack is melting. Low generation generally occurs during the winter, when the ice pack is frozen. Thus, hydro tends not be helpful for raising winter energy supplies. A similar pattern tends to happen in other temperate areas.

A third issue is that variability in hydro supply is already causing problems. Norway has recently reported that it may need to limit hydro exports in coming months because water reservoirs are low. Norway’s exports of electricity are used to help balance Europe’s wind and solar electricity. Thus, this issue may lead to yet another energy problem for Europe.

As another example, China reports a severe power crunch in its Sichuan Province, related to low rainfall and high temperatures. Fossil fuel generation is not available to fill the gap.

[3] Wind energy is not a greatly better than hydro and solar, in terms of variability and poor timing of supply.

For example, Europe experienced a power crunch in the third quarter of 2021 related to weak winds. Europe’s largest wind producers (Britain, Germany and France) produced only 14% of their rated capacity during this period, compared with an average of 20% to 26% in previous years. No one had planned for this kind of three-month shortfall.

In 2021, China experienced dry, windless weather, resulting in both its generation from wind and hydro being low. The country found it needed to use rolling blackouts to deal with the situation. This led to traffic lights failing and many families needing to eat candle-lit dinners.

Even viewed on a nationwide basis, US wind generation varies considerably from month to month.

Figure 6. Total US wind electricity generation through June 20, 2022, based on EIA data.

US total wind electricity generation tends to be highest in April or May. This can cause oversupply issues because hydro generation tends to be high about the same time. The demand for electricity tends to be low because of generally mild weather. The result is that even at today’s renewable levels, a wet, windy spring can lead to a situation in which the combination of hydro and wind electricity supply exceeds total local demand for electricity.

[4] As more wind and solar are added to the grid, the challenges and costs become increasingly great.

There are a huge number of technical problems associated with trying to add a large amount of wind and solar energy to the grid. Some of them are outlined in Figure 7.

Figure 7. Introductory slide from a presentation by power engineers shown in this YouTube Video.

One of the issues is torque distortion, especially related to wind energy.

Figure 8. Slide describing torque distortion issues from the same presentation to power engineers as Figure 7. YouTube Video.

There are also many other issues, including some outlined on this Drax website. Wind and solar provide no “inertia” to the system. This makes me wonder whether the grid could even function without a substantial amount of fossil fuel or nuclear generation providing sufficient inertia.

Furthermore, wind and solar tend to make voltage fluctuate, necessitating systems to absorb and discharge something called “reactive power.”

[5] The word “sustainable” has created unrealistic expectations with respect to intermittent wind and solar electricity.

A person in the wind turbine repair industry once told me, “Wind turbines run on a steady supply of replacement parts.” Individual parts may be made to last 20-years, or even longer, but there are so many parts that some are likely to need replacement long before that time. An article in Windpower Engineering says, “Turbine gearboxes are typically given a design life of 20 years, but few make it past the 10-year mark.”

There is also the problem of wind damage, especially in the case of a severe storm.

Figure 9. Hurricane-damaged solar panels in Puerto Rico. Source.

Furthermore, the operational lives for fossil fuel and nuclear generating plants are typically much longer than those for wind and solar. In the US, some nuclear plants have licenses to operate for 60 years. Efforts are underway to extend some licenses to 80 years.

With the short life spans for wind and solar, constant rebuilding of wind turbines and solar generation is necessary, using fossil fuels. Between the rebuilding issue and the need for fossil fuels to maintain the electric grid, the output of wind turbines and solar panels cannot be expected to last any longer than fossil fuel supply.

[6] Energy modeling has led to unrealistic expectations for wind and solar.

Energy models don’t take into account all of the many adjustments to the transmission system that are needed to support wind and solar, and the resulting added costs. Besides the direct cost of the extra transmission required, there is an ongoing need to inspect parts for signs of wear. Brush around the transmission lines also needs to be cut back. If adequate maintenance is not performed, transmission lines can cause fires. Burying transmission lines is sometimes an option, but doing so is expensive, both in energy use and cost.

Energy models also don’t take into account the way wind turbines and solar panels perform in “real life.” In particular, most researchers miss the point that electricity from solar panels cannot be expected to be very helpful for meeting our need for heat energy in winter. If we want to add more summer air conditioning, solar panels can “sort of” support this effort, especially if batteries are also added to help fine tune when, during the 24-hour day, the solar electricity will be utilized. Unfortunately, we don’t have any realistic way of saving the output of solar panels from summer to winter.

It seems to me that supporting air conditioning is a rather frivolous use for what seems to be a dwindling quantity of available energy supply. In my opinion, our first two priorities should be adequate food supply and preventing freezing in the dark in winter. Solar, especially, does nothing for these issues. Wind can be used to pump water for crops and animals. In fact, an ordinary windmill, built 100 years ago, can also be used to provide this type of service.

Because of the intermittency issue, especially the “summer to winter” intermittency issue, wind and solar are not truly replacements for electricity produced by fossil fuels or nuclear. The problem is that most of the current system needs to remain in place, in addition to the renewable energy system. When researchers make cost comparisons, they should be comparing the cost of the intermittent energy, including necessary batteries and grid enhancements with the cost of the fuel saved by operating these devices.

[7] Competitive pricing plans that enable the growth of wind and solar electricity are part of what is pushing a number of areas in the world toward a “freezing-in-the-dark” problem.

In the early days of electricity production, “utility pricing” was generally used. With this approach, vertical integration of electricity supply was encouraged. A utility would make long term contracts with a number of providers and would set prices for customers based on the expected long-term cost of electricity production and distribution. The utility would make certain that transmission lines were properly repaired and would add new generation as needed.

Energy prices of all kinds spiked in the late 1970s. Not long afterward, in an attempt to prevent high electricity prices from causing inflation, a shift in pricing arrangements started taking place. More competition was encouraged, with the new approach called competitive pricing. Vertically integrated groups were broken up. Wholesale electricity prices started varying by time of day, based on which providers were willing to sell their production at the lowest price, for that particular time period. This approach encouraged providers to neglect maintaining their power lines and stop adding more storage capacity. Any kind of overhead expense was discouraged.

In fact, under this arrangement, wind and solar were also given the privilege of “going first.” If too much energy in total was produced, negative rates could result for other providers. This approach was especially harmful for nuclear energy. Nuclear power plants found that their overall price structure was too low. They sometimes closed because of inadequate profitability. New investments in nuclear energy were discouraged, as was proper maintenance. This effect has been especially noticeable in Europe.

Figure 10. Nuclear, wind and solar electricity generated in Europe, based on data of BP’s 2022 Statistical Review of World Energy.

The result is that about a third of the gain from wind and solar energy has been offset by the decline in nuclear electricity generation. Of course, nuclear is another low-carbon form of electricity. It is a great deal more reliable than wind or solar. It can even help prevent freezing in the dark because it is likely to be available in winter, when more electricity for heating is likely to be needed.

Another issue is that competitive pricing discouraged the building of adequate storage facilities for natural gas. Also, it tended to discourage purchasing natural gas under long term contracts. The thinking went, “Rather than building storage, why not wait until the natural gas is needed, and then purchase it at the market rate?”

Unfortunately, producing natural gas requires long-term investments. Companies producing natural gas operate wells that produce approximately equal amounts year-round. The same pattern of high winter-consumption of natural gas tends to occur almost simultaneously in many Northern Hemisphere areas with cold winters. If the system is going to work, customers need to be purchasing natural gas, year-round, and stowing it away for winter.

Natural gas production has been falling in Europe, as has coal production (not shown), necessitating more imports of replacement fuel, often natural gas.

Figure 11. Natural gas production in Europe, based on data of BP’s 2022 Statistical Review of World Energy.

With competitive rating and LNG ships seeming to sell natural gas on an “as needed” basis, there has been a tendency in Europe to overlook the need for long term contracts and additional storage to go with rising natural gas imports. Now, Europe is starting to discover the folly of this approach. Solar is close to worthless for providing electricity in winter; wind cannot be relied upon. It doesn’t ramp up nearly quickly enough, in any reasonable timeframe. The danger is that countries will risk having their citizens freeze in the dark because of inadequate natural gas import availability.

[8] The world is a very long way from producing enough wind and solar to solve its energy problems, especially its need for heat in winter.

The energy supply that the world uses includes much more than electricity. It contains oil and fuels burned directly, such as natural gas. The percentage share of this total energy supply that wind and solar output provides depends on how it is counted. The International Energy Agency treats wind and solar as if they only replace fuel, rather than replacing dispatchable electricity.

Figure 12 Wind and solar generation for a category called “Wind, Solar, etc.” by the IEA. Amounts are for 2020 for Germany, the UK, Australia, Norway, the United States, and Japan. For other groups shown in this chart, the amounts are calculated using 2019 data.

On this basis, the share of total energy provided by the Wind and Solar category is very low, only 2.2% for the world as a whole. Germany comes out highest of the groups analyzed, but even it is replacing only 6.0% of its total energy consumed. It is difficult to imagine how the land and water around Germany could tolerate wind turbines and solar panels being ramped up sufficiently to cover such a shortfall. Other parts of the world are even farther from replacing current energy supplies with wind and solar.

Clearly, we cannot expect wind and solar to ever be ramped up to meet our energy needs, even in combination with hydro.

About Gail Tverberg

My name is Gail Tverberg. I am an actuary interested in finite world issues - oil depletion, natural gas depletion, water shortages, and climate change. Oil limits look very different from what most expect, with high prices leading to recession, and low prices leading to financial problems for oil producers and for oil exporting countries. We are really dealing with a physics problem that affects many parts of the economy at once, including wages and the financial system. I try to look at the overall problem.

My suburban city council in the Los Angeles suburbs voted this week to lease a fleet of Teslas to make our police department an all-EV agency. As soon as they can get it done — which won’t be soon soon, but ASAP in government time — the South Pasadena Police Department will only have electric vehicles for patrol officers, administrators, and detectives.

Now, watch just a minute and a half of the council debate, because it’s amazing. In this exchange, a member of the council who recently stepped down from a position as the chair of a local electric power utility warns that the power grid isn’t enormously reliable, which makes it risky to put an entire police department into nothing but electric cars. Then there was the scientist Delgado who could stop a bull via mind control in 1963. Nineteen sixty-three! Makes you wonder just what hey can achieve nowadays. The CIA was already doing plenty in the late 1960’s with MK Ultra and various methods of mind control.

I still come across people online who believe that they are being targeted by the spooks via some kind of non-ionizing radiation that makes them ill. It is one of those “extraordinary” claims that requires a bit more evidence than just the assertion it is happening.

But it isn’t extraordinary in the sense that magic and miracles and invisible dragons in the garage that breath room-temperature fire are extraordinary. The technology exists to do this sort of thing. There are energy beam weapons used for crowd control that make it too hot or uncomfortable for people to remain in the beam. And there are those people who got sick while working at the US embassy in Havana, allegedly due to something similar.

As for mind control, ordinary propaganda and peer pressure and the threat of ostracism and loss of income works pretty well for about 90% of off people. They not only do what they are told todo; they also think what they are told to think. Thought control over the other 10% is probably a challenge that is being pursued these days in ways that we can only guess at.

There is some speculative stuff in there that people can take or leave, but also a clear timeline of events and some very good interviews with concerned professionals in several relevant fields. I was particularly impressed by the one with the late virologist Luc Montagnier, who doesn’t say everyone who was jabbed is going to die horribly, but he certainly is suspicious of what is in the shots and he gives a stark warning to people not to get jabbed.

I can’t help wondering whether Montagnier wasn’t Mullised. Indeed, I can’t help wondering if Kary Mullised wasn’t Mullised. His death was uncannily timely and convenient for the perps of this operation.

IMO there is a high probability the deep state will assassinate Joe Biden in the next five weeks. All debate about any issue would be quashed. All opposition can be characterized as murderers. The mid term election results would not be able to be questioned. We would see new laws legislated and existing laws in the patriot act and NDAA implemented. MAGA- whatever that is or they decide it is- could be persecuted. The standard transition to a war time economy society using the new characterization presented to us for six years as conservatives as the enemy of democracy. MAGA is the new Jew to send off to the camps. They need pearl harbor #3 and I think they will have it. Both Biden and Kamala were selected carefully in my opinion. I actually would prefer Kamala to Biden. She seems more human to me. I find Bidens ability to hold two contradicting statements to be very disconcerting.

We will defend Taiwan if attacked.
      Followed by
We support the one China principle.

      MAGA supporters are dangerous extremists.
      Followed by
      We must be non divisive.

I must say upon first reading Orwells 1984 many decades ago I found the idea of “doublethink” to be farfetched but I am reluctantly beginning to wonder if by some strange occurrence it was accurate. As Winston said I think “freedom is the freedom to say 2+2=4” thus denying the principle of doublethink. Doublethink actually has a logic of sort. If two contradictory statements can be held as truth at the same time than a malleability of representation that language is is created.

I dont think these statements cause any cognitive dissonance in Biden and I wonder if this is yet another training of humans about what is desirable in a good citizen. Norman do you agree? A skill set demonstrated? I duly note the same technique being applied to the new labels of what is suddenly considered the enemy both foreign and domestic. What is consistent is the vagueness created by the contradictory statements allowing all actions to be appropriate. The suddenness and outrageousness of the change is muted by its broad application. Its actually not all that sudden. The arbitrary and false accusations leveled at Trump now becoming applicable on a much wider scale could perhaps be regarded as sudden. The fact that Trump was investigated on slanderous untrue statements while possible genuine crimes such as his interaction with Jeffry Epstein or his rushing the injections through a sham approval and pressure on the EU to do the same are ignored and fit the teaching to a T. We will tell you what is a crime. Its baseless on purpose. Its contradictory on purpose. Its vague on purpose. Thats the whole point, the learning. If persecution needs a base it robs it of its power. Now top that off with the complete ignoral of the massive evidence of Biden and Hunters criminal corruption. Scoop of ice cream on the cake. A master piece multi layered teaching. The only thing that might be considered sudden is that all society now realizes it is subject to arbitrary persecution not just “the Don”. Those on the edge will attempt to get safe and learn new doublethink skills.

The problem/reaction/solution attempts to mold the new order seem to come in waves. The virus/injections let up for the summer. The next wave is due and before the midterms. The possibility of Bidens assignation as a deep state problem/reaction/solution seems probable to me. I think he knows it and is proud of what will be achieved with his death. Let us pray I am wrong. Bidens exemplary skill set may be valuable to preserve. As mentioned I dont think Kamela has the same doublethink skill set. Trumps inditement may be all that is needed not a more radical problem/solution.

It was a nice summer off. I do thank my most compassionate masters for that. More please. Pretty please with sugar on top. Im really a good dog at heart I can be retrained. Whoops too old.

The simple MO: push Biden down the stairs, cause a high probability type injury seen in the elderly who fall: broken hip, broken wrist, broken shoulder, or closed head injury (CHI), admit him to the hospital where he would die from a pulmonary embolism, intracerebral or extradural bleed, etc. The treachery, the deception, and the psychopathy clearly demonstrated by those who would control us has become so florid that even this would no longer be out of the realm of possibility.

It’s a modified Turner Diaries false flag narrative.

At the present time, UK gets 20-50+% energy for the grid although our target for 100%+ 2035 with planning up to 2035 and beyond and this is without the extra.! For we also aspire to become what I call – a nascent, pragmatic hydrogen economy from blue/green renewable hydrogen! Next phase to save the economic viability of capitalism and democracy – a national plan to build eventual energy surplus and meet NetZero UN goal and started in May 2022 and provide 2-10GW by 2024-30 with world’s largest electrolyser manufacturing and offshore renewable infrastructure storage as follows https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/low-carbon-hydrogen-supply-2-competition-successful-projects/low-carbon-hydrogen-supply-2-competition-stream-1-phase-1-summaries-of-successful-projects

Another point is that the largest conflagration since WW2 in Europe alongside an authoritarian regime holding the world economy over the barrel is unacceptable(bad pun aside)! Yet as a astute nation, we’ll be building back better to tackle carbon. With a deterrent against authoritarian energy geopolitical power plays by any(notwithstanding Russia)!

PS I understand everyone has differing perspectives. Yet did you know thanks to Gail’s analysis, I found out that the UK was largest producer and consumer of coal for the entire 19th and early 20th centuries until the start of WW1? Did you also know that since WW1 coal usage(dirtiest) has been on an exorable decline ever since to the 2010s onwards where no direct usage whatsoever since the start of the industrial revolution itself? Therefore my final point, could the UK energy and industrial strategy possibly be the most advanced, constructive in active construction strategy anywhere in the world right now to deal with our global energy crisis?

    • Available coal supply in the UK, and in fact, in most of Europe has already been used. We will have to see how things work out. Our current economy depends on a whole portfolio of different types of products made from fossil fuels besides electricity. We need lubricants made from oil, and fertilizer made using natural gas or coal. A lot of direct heat is with natural gas. Switching to all electricity would not be easy.

    • Very Far Frank says:

This cornucopian splurge reads more like a tourist advertisement for the UK than it does a measured analysis of the country’s position in a grounded energy environment.

Saying that, I value the optimism- if this is Liz Truss though, I’d say you need to be a little less transparent…

The fact that you mix blue/green hydrogen without cognitive dissonance shows that there is at least one learning opportunity for you in this field.

could the UK energy and industrial strategy possibly be the most advanced, constructive in active construction strategy anywhere in the world right now to deal with our global energy crisis?

The UK has been at the forefront of wind power which is fine if you want some intermittent electricity produced from giant complex machines that can’t be maintained or replaced without fossil fuels.

For Norman. We have the NIST report on building 7. Fire caused the building 7 collapse straight down into its own footprint through the path of most resistance at free fall velocity. So what was the owner Larry Silverstein talking about when interviewed and saying “we made a decision to pull it”? A controlled demolition takes weeks if not months of planning and implementation. Are we to believe on 911 a team of 50 individuals had the materials available and the planning to do 6 weeks of work in 7 hours? How can both Larry Silversteins statement and the NIST conclusions both be true? We can put all our questions to rest now. This video answers all the questions , the radical observed differences from NIST conclusion, AND Larry Silversteins “”we made the decision to pull it statement”. Too many electric cars charging at night may overload electrical grid
As electric car ownership rises, we will need new infrastructure to avoid overwhelming electricity grids – including public charging stations and more daytime charging
The growth in electric car ownership could strain power grids if most drivers continue charging primarily at home overnight. Investment in daytime charging options will be crucial to help the western US power grid handle the demand with an estimated 50 per cent of drivers using electric vehicles by 2035.

That finding comes from computer models looking at how driver charging behaviours and available charging station infrastructure at home and in public places could impact peak net electricity demand – the highest electrical power demand minus power provided by solar and wind power.

If drivers primarily charge vehicles at home during the night, that could lead to a 25 per cent surge in peak net electricity demand when states reach 50 per cent electric vehicle ownership, and possibly surpass grid capacity at even higher levels of ownership. But expanding daytime charging opportunities could reduce that increase in peak net electricity demand to just 7.5 per cent and help reduce the costs of expanding grid capacity.

“One of the big results from our study is that just making the shift of which charging infrastructure you build and where you encourage people to charge is a huge difference in the result for the grid,” says Siobhan Powell at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, who led the research while at Stanford University in California.

Astronaut slams conspiracy theorists who claim moon landing was hoax: ‘It pains me’

In this July 20, 1969 photo made available by NASA, astronaut Buzz Aldrin Jr. stands next to the Passive Seismic Experiment device on the surface of the the moon during the Apollo 11 mission.
European Union Space Agency’s Thomas Pesquet launched into a Twitter rant on conspiracy theorists saying the moon landings were fake.
    AP; AFP via Getty Images
Ahead of NASA’s second attempt of its Artemis I moon rocket launch on Saturday, astronaut Thomas Pesquet is slamming conspiracy theorists who claim the original moon landing never happened to begin with.

Pesquet — a member of the European Union Space Agency who has been to space four times — went off in a series of tweets on Wednesday, shaming disbelievers who recently revisited claims that NASA’s Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin actually filmed their Apollo 11 moon landing in a movie studio in 1969
The other five landings weren’t immune from skepticism either.
“But why do we have to waste precious time on this again: of course yes, humans went to the moon during the Apollo missions. And we’re going back,” he said, translated from French.
“And yes, my emotions don’t matter, but it pains me, after everything I’ve done for 10 years, my two missions, the thousands of hours of extra work to share them and explain science and technology, to have to do this tweet today,” he continued.
It also worries me enormously to see how some people have fun blurring the truth and others are having fun. Seriously ask yourself the question: who wins in all this? Not NASA no, but the manipulators who tell you that everything is wrong.”

Pesquet added that the theories are distasteful to people who risked their lives on the successful moon landings and that it’s easy for social media trolls to just sit back and spread misinformation.

    • Hubb says:

This debate is pointless. Simply wait until the next manned lunar landing is confirmed. Not in my lifetime though.

    • Tim Groves says:

      Successful moon landings?

All most people got out of the missions were some velcro fasteners on their hiking gear and a non-stick frying pan!

Seriously, can we approach this from a slightly different angle?

Concerning whether the moon landings happened as advertised or not, let’s ask that well known Hillary Clinton question: What difference, at this point, does it make?

I’ll start the ball rolling by observing that whether the Apollo missions were real or fake would have made no difference to the general public’s view of the missions.

Real missions presented as real and a fake missions presented as real would have been presented in such a similar fashion that most people would have believed the missions to be real.

“People want to marvel. Fake only disappoints when found out.”

      • Herbie Ficklestein. says:

As long as we don’t debate Global Warming, I’m 😊….

        • If humans’ big need is adequate heat in winter, perhaps Global Warming isn’t all bad. Population has always moved to habitable areas. People did not die off completely, even in ice ages. Political leaders need some sort of concern that supposedly tops all others. One of them now is climate change. Another is communicable diseases. I suppose a third is “Russia: Bad.”

Too much population in total is the big issue, but it is difficult to discuss this issue. The economy cannot afford to support the many who are not contributing adequately today. In fact, it is not clear that it can support very many in total. We lack the skills and the supply of draft animals needed to get along without fossil fuels.

Also, I expect that the big problem in the future will be complete unavailability of some things, for some periods of time. People who have modeled the future have assumed that fossil fuels will always be available, but at high prices. They also assume that electricity will always be available, perhaps at high prices. Without these things, the economy tends to stop. We can’t get sufficient food and fresh water. People tend to die off, from disease if nothing else, if food supplies are inadequate.

          • Artleads says:

This clarity is so welcome! It’s problematic getting it on Facebook, but it needs to go somewhere where it’s easy to see.

We need to deal with a large die-off of humans. I believe that preparing for that is, ironically, the same as figuring out how to live a little longer.

          • Mike Roberts says:

The problem is that such heating happens a little bit too slowly to be able to counteract an energy crisis. Plus, that heating has other impacts which I think should be fairly clear at this point. So maybe not all bad but overall bad.

          • Fast Eddy says:

The history of human civilization is an astonishing story of migration, innovation, and social development. Now, the exciting new field of “big history” allows us to explore human civilizations in ways unavailable to historians of previous generations. Big history scholars take a multidisciplinary approach to study great spans of time, unlocking important themes, trends, and developments across time and space.

Unlike a traditional survey of history – with its focus on dates and events, kings and battles – The Big History of Civilizations is your chance to apply this cutting-edge historical approach to the epic story of humanity around the world. Taught by acclaimed Professor Craig G. Benjamin of Grand Valley State University, these 36 sweeping lectures trace the story of human civilizations from our emergence as a species, through the agricultural and industrial revolutions, and into the future.

It only takes a few minutes of one lecture for you to discover that Big History is an amazing approach to history. Its grand vision will give you powerful new insights into human civilization, and it offers a profound analysis of some of our biggest questions: What makes us human? Where did we come from? And where are we going? There may be no easy answers, but Professor Benjamin takes you on a powerful journey to the limits of our understanding.

What differentiates big history from any other field is the way it combines divergent fields, from archaeology and anthropology to ecology and philosophy, and ties them together, allowing you to see patterns of our past, present – and even future. From the just-right “Goldilocks factors” that allow civilizations to emerge to different ways civilizations have emerged across time and around the word, this riveting approach to history offers a multidisciplinary toolkit to tell the story about what makes us human.

Banks Dust Off Lockdown Plans to Beat Possible Power Blackouts in London

(Bloomberg) — Some of the world’s largest banks are dusting down their lockdown contingency plans to guard against possible power outages in London this winter.

Banks are holding regular joint talks and revisiting plans to use offsite locations or encourage home working, according to the trade body UK Finance, which is coordinating the discussions. Firms are also studying the experience of South Africa, where rolling power cuts are part of daily life.

“All firms regardless of size are paying close attention,” Andrew Rogan, director of operational resilience at UK Finance, said in an interview. “There is no sense of panic, just everyone is making sure that their ducks are in a row.”

The renewed focus comes amid a global energy crisis, prompting concern that outages could occur as temperatures drop. Those fears are particularly acute in Europe, whose energy needs have long been underpinned by Russian gas.

The UK has been planning for several days over the winter when cold weather may combine with gas shortages, leading to organized blackouts for industry and households. France expects to ask households, businesses and local governments to reduce energy consumption to avoid rotating power cuts while Germany will nationalize gas giant Uniper SE to avert a collapse of its energy sector.

It means the biggest finance firms need continent-wide contingency plans. A JPMorgan Chase & Co. executive said this month it has electricity contingency plans for all of its locations. Big offices have backup generators and there’s also the possibility to move staff around between countries temporarily in case there’s an emergency in one, Germany head Stefan Behr said at a conference in Frankfurt.

My stomach turns every day. News about prices and especially electricity prices- I can not hear this anymore. Why?
Because politics does not go to the roots. Electricity is scarce and expensive. The latter is so true. But close? Our wind farm in Fürstenau is running very little. At least when the wind blows. Not because the machines are defective. Not because the network is tight. No. Because there is gambling on the stock exchange.
As wind power operators, we have been forced onto this stock exchange. From the legislator. Now they say we get too much for our electricity. For the month of August 2022, there were about 46 cents for our production on the stock exchange. You have to be ashamed of that. You can’t tell anyone that. But we can’t help it. We have to go to the stock exchange. If the electricity was at least scarce and we deliver on supply and demand for this price. No.
News: Today is Saturday, September 17, 2022. Our park could produce around 8000 kWh per hour. But it is closed. This is because there is speculation on the stock market again. Now that shouldn’t bother us at all. We get the regulated ”electricity” fully remunerated. The customer pays. He is told that electricity is scarce and he needs to save. In truth, he pays for the switched off and the resulting shortage of electricity and does not know how to cope with it.
    Perverse. Sorry.
Hundreds of thousands of kilowatt hours have not been produced by us in this way. Because politics does not have this on the screen at all. Turn on nuclear power plants because electricity is scarce. Burn coal again because electricity is scarce and also properly still add gas to the power plants because electricity is scarce. And wind farms – so that electricity remains scarce. Dear electricity customer: You are being fooled and so are we.
I would like to supply the next baker with affordable electricity, the next settlement or the next factory. I’m not allowed to. Because the big ones do the business, for themselves and not for the general public. And politics is playing along again.

Oh and why not lift most restrictions and let the CovIDIOTS spread their filthy disease… as we know an injected MOREON — who contracts Covid… becomes a mutation factory…. it’s a numbers game here…

Hi Gail, many thanks for the new essay.

On a positive note, UK gas production for the 1st half of 2022 increased 26% year on year:

    https://oeuk.org.uk/energy-supply-crisis-uk-gas-producers-boost-domestic-production-by-26-in-just-six-months/

This page gives a decent overview of UK energy:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/energy-trends-june-2022

The most recent report covers Q1 22….the report for Q2 22 should be published by the end of this month. Here’s a few interesting details from the Q1 22 report:

-UK was a net importer of crude oil by 3.4 million tonnes

-North Sea production has been hampered by delayed maintenance due to covid

-At the end of Q1 22, UK held stocks of 9.6 million tonnes of crude/oil products

-LNG imports up by almost 50%, while gas exports more than doubled….looks like
the UK is processing the LNG then piping it to mainland Europe

-Renewables accounted for 45.5% of electricity generation

-Renewables + nuclear accounted for 60.4% of electricity generation

-Installed renewables capacity increased by 3.1GW

-Electricity generated from fossil fuels fell by 12%

(All increases/decreases are year on year)

    • Dave Gutknecht says:

These “renewables” majorly include burning of wood pellets from the U.S. South—yet another contradiction of the “renewable” narrative.

      • Jon F says:

I know….but…. if burning overseas wood can be rebranded as biomass energy….surely coal can be rebranded as bio-something and given a nice greenwashed narrative?

        • Carbon sequestration is the gimmick for making coal green. Of course, you have to burn a whole lot more coal, for the process to work. Also, it is unlikely that the CO2 will stay underground. It is not clear that you are any ahead in the long term, in terms of CO2. But it is possible to burn the coal a whole lot more quickly.

          • Jon F says:

            That sounds promising…..

We can rebrand the remaining UK coal fired power stations as…Carbon Sequestration Plants (CSPs)….

The more we burn… the more we sequester!!

No…that’s not smoke pouring out of the smokestacks….merely water vapour!

Our near-term energy future is secure….

I’ve been using solar cooking devices for food processing here in London for a dozen or so years. Got to have a sense of humour of course but with clear skies and direct beam solar radiation you can do quite a lot. It can be up to 1kw per m2 at the ground, with high reflectance at the collector and high absorption at the target pot in a suitable greenhouse enclosure that can be a pretty good conversion and better efficiency than a PV panel and all that stuff. Main obstacle to uptake is that people can’t be bothered, but also nobody has heard of it really or seen anything of it in practise. Since the main demand on the grid is around teatime at 6pm, cooking earlier , slowly and using food as a ‘battery’ could contribute to smoothing peak demand a little. But so far it’s only for weirdos like me…this clip shows what’s possible , won’t replace a pizza oven as it’s only the sun, but hey it’s free when it’s shining. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=topQyUn163c

            • Saint Ewart says:

It’s very easy to make a parabolic dish reflector from an old satellite dish, but dangerous since the focus is far out of the shallow parabola. It can burn flesh easily. Also if unattended , the focus will wander far, so don’t park your lpg delivery van nearby. Or your Tesla. There is a little bit to learn about solar cooking ( if interested, most aren’t as it’s not exactly BAU – you have to plan ahead a little). Here’s a good but ropey website from the U.K. which will tell you about , box cookers, panel cookers and parabolic cookers. Along with integrated cooking.

Was heat the topic of this post ?
I know of the cookers you describe but I would not want to watch a pot for many hours of the day. But I recon it can make great stews.

Anyhow, in my area I can do with wood
              forageing….

          • JesseJames says:

That solar cooker is good info Saint.
Our energy mix in the future should include this.

            • Saint Ewart says:

Watching a pot for many hours of the day is not necessary. Same as with a slow cooker for a low power (eg panel cooker) unit, it won’t burn. So you can do other stuff, or sleep, if you use a para later or evacuated tube solar cooker it cooks faster. With clear skies it can be similar to a hob, with the right unit. Odeillo In the Pyrennes, I met the chief engineer there, it is not a domestic scale solar cooker.

Heat I believe to be the topic of the post, yes. If I had a solar cooker and a pile of wood , and somebody else had just a pile of wood. Whose pile would last longer? Also, when landing on the sun, is it best to go during daytime or at nightime, to avoid harmful burns?

  36. Herbie Ficklestein. says:

Looks to me we are seeing a repay of trade barriers that were set up prior to the Great Depression…don’t care the reason why, but it eeriely mirrors that era along with the FX difficulties….

    Europe turns on China
Once skeptical of America’s increasingly hostile stance toward China, the EU and its member states are adopting a cascade of new measures that bring their policies closer in line with those of the United States.

Why it matters: Beijing’s push for Europe to adopt “strategic autonomy” from the United States — in the hope the EU would maintain warmer ties with China — now looks like a moot point.

What’s happening: Last week, the European Commission unveiled a proposed ban on products made with forced labor, after intense pressure from lawmakers and human rights activists concerned about forced labor in Xinjiang.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also criticized Chinese funding of European research institutions and announced a new “Defense of Democracy” package intended to scrutinize foreign funding of European academic institutions in order to “bring covert foreign influence and shady funding to light.”
The U.S. implemented an import ban on all products made in Xinjiang earlier this year, and the Trump administration placed greater scrutiny on foreign funding in U.S. universities.
Zoom in: Germany is a key benchmark. Berlin was once a stalwart supporter of close trade ties with China, and thus it tended to avoid tension with Beijing. But Berlin now seems to have turned a major corner on issues from trade to human rights to direct military engagement in the Indo-Pacific.

Last week, Germany’s Economy Minister Robert Habeck pledged “no more naivety” in Germany’s trade with China. Habeck announced his team was working on a new economic policy to reduce dependence on China across key industries and closely scrutinize inbound investment from China, saying, “We cannot allow ourselves to be blackmailed.”
The German Foreign Ministry also announced it was appointing a special representative to Pacific nations, where China’s expanding influence has alarmed Australia and the United States.

    https://www.axios.com/2022/09/20/europe-turns-on-china

The Europe-China relationship has plummeted since then.

China’s “rock solid” support for Russia during its invasion of Ukraine soured the attitude of many Europeans toward Beijing.
Beijing’s ongoing crackdown on Hong Kong has also stunned many in Europe.
A United Nations report published in late August warning of “serious human rights violations” and possible “crimes against humanity” in Xinjiang sparked harsh criticism from European leaders.

Seems we are headed into a perfect storm of a collapse

    • The shortage of per capita energy is very similar to that at the time of the Great Depression.

      • I also think that the population is too high relative to resources in Xinjiang. Wages are very low, so that products can be sold at acceptable prices to the world.

      • Dennis L. says:

Okay, that seems reasonable, so deflation is more likely. Many assets are less useful as everything depends on energy, the economy depends on discretionary items for money velocity.

Looks to be an interesting time.

    • MM says:

      We are not seizing Russia.
      We are seizing the planet.

      Thank you for your cooperation.

    • Interesting! Armstrong talks about people who have billions have no way to spend it, because there is a limit to what a person can spend on houses, boats, and entertainment. Instead, they want to influence the outcome of world events, like a real life SIMS game.

Also, paying a standing army all the time doesn’t make economic sense, unless the army has some wars to fight.

Russian oligarchs were caught up in fighting each other. Putin was not a communist and not an oligarch. He was never a senior spy, or something like that. When 1991 came around, he resigned. In a sense, he was like a Trump in Russia. He was instantly popular, because people knew he wasn’t like the other leaders.

(I didn’t watch some of the middle.)

The Great Reset is basically a debt default and the EU is a disaster that will fall apart. At this point most of the attack on Russia is related to “climate change” and to shut down fossil fuels.

Now there is a computer model that forecasts where problems are going to occur. If a country is dumping the currency if another country, there is a good chance that the country doing the dumping is going to attack the other country. Money flows forecast what is ahead.

World War I and II made the US the leading economy. Now people can sense war is coming. That is why the dollar is rising. Capital flows are flowing our of Europe. Europe will eventually collapse. Using the same interest rates for all of the countries in the EU cannot work. Collapse is ahead.

      • Jef Jelten says:

I have been saying something like this for years. Those who are controlling the direction of how the world works have more money than they can possibily spend. Many make a million dollars A DAY! They can buy people like buying a coffee.

At this level it becomes clear that money is worthless without things to buy and the only things to buy that matters is access to and control of the planets finite resources.

What almost everyone misses wrt analysis of world events is how much of the US foreign policy and actions are about Demand Destruction to keep people from using up those finite resources.

The other thing that is finite is the biospheres ability to absorb humanity’s waste stream. We are poisoning the environment in a hundred different ways killing ourselves and all other life with us. Just one more reason for massive Demand Destruction or as OFW calls it UEP!

        • MM says:

There were no plastic bottles in Germany when I was young. It was around the 80s that a discussion about plastic bottles came up. A lot of people argued that it will be bad for the environment. At least a bottle-deposit fee should have been introduced.
What we got was a voluntary self commitment for plastic recycling. Well, now we see where that brought us.
Who actually created THE PROBLEM (in parts at least besides the consumers) and who HAS “THE SOLUTION”.
I mean Germany now has a bottle deposit for plastic bottles but the rest of the world has not.

          Good old Hegel…

          • Plastic bottles are cheap to make; recycling old ones is not. It is possible to legislate solutions that make no sense economically.

            • MM says:

More laws always make sense because some people need to be elected so that we can have even more laws.
Cleaning glass bottles also takes quite some resources but in the long run is more effective than plastic bottles if you calculate the overall damage.
The bottles were just an example how a problem was “deliberately” created so that the people can later accept that UEP is the best solution to human existence.

On the one hand, there exists the Western upper class, which effectively believes that physical reality is obsolete. Rather, control over the flow of information matters. You decide what people believe and people have to follow your rules to exchange information with others within your network. When you exclude people from those networks, they become irrelevant and obsolete.

And then at the bottom of the social totem pole exist the conservatives, contrarians and dissidents, who are excluded from the networks of information exchange. They have their own school of thought, namely, that seizing control over physical reality is a source of unlimited power.”

The part you quote is good. Near the end, he says:

. Even if we had transitioned to renewable energy, our energy consumption would have had to go down: We don’t have any proper material to build all of the batteries necessary to store the electricity we capture at any significant scale. Everything we’re doing is subject to economies of scale. The first solar energy you add to your grid is pretty useful. By the time you want to add enough solar to have enough electricity in the middle of winter in Germany, you’re well beyond the point of diminishing returns.

        No kidding!

  41. NomadicBeer says:

    Gail,
Can I point out something here that I think it’s becoming increasingly important.

Try to put yourself in an oligarch’s shoes. When you have access to a money printing machine, there are few things that you cannot do to people. Yes, you cannot change the laws of physics but people are easy to manipulate with money.

So now that they are wrapping up Covid we see Ukr escalating.

My very simplistic theory is this: I don’t know their goals but I know that they are trying to manipulate EVERYONE.
People that did not fall for Coflu hysteria fell for Ukraine. Those of us that did not buy any of it might yet be brainwashed by something else.
    Here are some possibilities:
    – For people that STILL buy into left vs right, a red wave followed by loud proclamations of freedom! might start trusting the govt again and be crushed. Look at Florida and Texas. Florida has a law the discrimination on vaccination status is illegal and yet hospitals, cruise ship etc they all do it with no consequences.
    – Escalation of Ukr “war” with sending american troops (they are already there but I mean mentioning it in the media).

There could be others. I already see my favorite bloggers falling like dominoes. Dilbert’s creator, Nassim Taleb and a lot of others fell to the vaccine propaganda.
John Michael Greer seem to be collapsing as we speak to the Ukraine escalation (he only allows pro-Ukraine comments now).

So please Gail and everybody here, please try to maintain your humanity despite the stress, the trolling and the pressure to censor in order to “protect granma/children” or whatever the excuse of the day in naziland is.

    Good luck!

I suspect, in fact, that what’s behind the mobilization is that the other members of his cabinet finally pressured him into doing what, objectively speaking, he should have done months ago. With regard to Europe’s leaders, my take is that they suffer from the peculiar arrogance of the technocratic class; they are so certain that they’re the smartest people in the room, and they understand the world better than anyone else, that when things don’t go the way they expect they’re left flailing. Their reaction to Brexit is a fine example, and far from the only one.

The Scottish government has set an October 2023 date for an independence referendum, but the UK Tories are totally against it – wonder why?

On the other hand, opinion seems to be headed in only one direction, and indeed there are generational differences, so the longer that the Tories put off the referendum, the more likely, perhaps, they are to lose Scotland. They are ‘caught between a rock and a hard_er_ place’?

    > Support for independence is at an all-time high, major new poll finds

Support for an independent Scotland has reached its highest-ever level in a major survey which identifies long-term changes in people’s social attitudes.

The latest publication of the British Social Attitudes (BSA) survey shows more than half of people north of the Border think Scotland should be an independent nation.

It is the highest figure recorded since 1999 when a question of how Scotland should be governed was included for the first time.

In that year – when the Scottish Parliament was officially opened – support for independence was at 27%, while 59% backed devolution and 10% said they believed Holyrood should not exist.

The new figures, based on a survey carried out in 2021, show that 52% back independence, while support for devolution has dropped to 38%. Just 8% now think there should be no Scottish Parliament.

The BSA report noted: “Since 2014, there has been a marked increase in the level of support for independence, and especially so since the EU referendum of 2016, after which leaving the UK became more popular than devolution for the first time.

“Against this backdrop, it is perhaps not surprising that Scotland’s constitutional status should have become an issue of lively debate once more.

“The Union has certainly become decidedly less popular north of the Border.”

SNP deputy leader Keith Brown said: “This is the highest-ever support for independence in this series of authoritative surveys. Becoming independent means never again will Scotland suffer the damage of Westminster Tory governments people here don’t vote for.

“Because of Westminster control over Scotland, we are subject to a Tory party moving ever more to the right – apparently planning to scrap the cap on bankers’ bonuses while the vast majority of people take a hit to their living standards because of Brexit.

“Independent European countries similar to Scotland are wealthier and fairer than the UK, so why not Scotland?”

The release of Azov prisoners, plus foreign fighters (also called in the old way ‘mercenaries’) was made through Turkish and Saudi negotiations.
For English foreign fighters, since they had fought in Syria together with the Kurds against the Turks, Saudi brokerages were needed, because the Turks were probably quite disappointed that they were freed.
At the same time, the Saudis are buying Russian oil to run their own power plants and sell all their oil abroad and have invested in Russian oil companies.
“Saudi Arabia has doubled the amount of fuel oil it was buying from Russia for its power plants, freeing up its crude for export […] Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Holding Company has quietly invested more than $600 million in Russia’s three major energy companies.”
And to conclude: Turkey will partially pay Russian gas in Roubles.
    The circle seems closed.

Every time there is a middleman, there is extraordinary opportunity for the “corruption cut” in the deal. These brokers have a huge financial interest in perpetuating the “Western” sponsored UKR -Russia conflict. The same could be said for fertilizer, NH3, Li, and other natural resources.

Mechanisms of Endothelial Protection by Natural Bioactive Compounds from Fruit and Vegetables

The endothelium is fundamental for the regulation of vascular tone and structure. Under disease conditions, including the presence of cardiovascular disease risk factors, the endothelium loses its protective role and becomes a proatherosclerotic structure. In this article we searched for strategies from PUBMED and Science Direct databases using the following key words: endothelium, natural bioactive compounds, polyphenols and cardiovascular diseases. The search was restricted to english language papers. Studies have identified the contribution of diet to the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. In this context, high intakes of fruit and vegetables are associated with the decrease of cardiovascular diseases. Thus the most important fruit/vegetables and bioactive compounds to prevent endothelial diseases are berries, apples, virgin olive oil, tomatoes, soybeans, and polyphenols, carotenoids and unsaturated fatty acids, respectively. The bioactive compounds from fruit and vegetables provide endothelial protection through the following mechanisms: improved eNOS/NO bioavailability, attenuates oxidative stress, inhibited NF-κB pathway and decreased cell adhesion molecules expression. In this article natural bioactive compound mechanisms of endothelium protection are thoroughly reviewed.

Southfront reports 1 in 3 soldiers in the Kharkov offensive “from NATO countries”.
True? Who knows. Southfront provided very good analysis in the Syrian conflict in the Ukraine… By NATO they would mean Polish. Poland and Ukraine warring with Russia same as ever for 1500 years. Whats not the same is Russia can not attack the command centers and logistical paths in Poland as it is a NATO country.

Russia leaving Kharkov to reinforce south was detected by USA satellites prior to the offensive.
USA high level military planned the offensive.
The offensive was only possible because of USA and EU weapons.
There is some degree of participation by volunteers from NATO countries in the Ukraine military.

As proxy wars go the isolation between super power and proxy is quite quite thin and transparent IMO. This is way different than Syria. This isnt just adding a big fellow to win a tug of war. The fellows on the rope are largely from the superpowers not the proxy nations. Once the referendums are held in 3-2-1 from Russias perspective there is no proxy Donbass Kherson are Russian territory.

What prevents WW3. A charade. Kabuki theater that this is a proxy war. This veneer is paper thin right now.

What prevents WW3? This is the optimist viewpoint.

Russia is strong enough to just take strikes by NATO weapons using NATO satellite intelligence and NATO logistical support using some degree of troops from NATO countries (especially tech /specialist) until the economic and energy collapse underway deteriorates the wests capabilities that they can not continue.
    OR
Russia is not strong enough to take the punishment in the timeframe needed. Putin goes- a western aligned Russian leader manifests.

The underlying assumption to the optimist viewpoint is that BOTH entities are willing to both accept the outcome and are able to stay the course rather than engage in WW3. I find that assumption dubious. The music has stopped and their is not enough chairs. No one is just going to say oh well ke sera so much for the empire.

Let alone little issues like the Zaph nuclear plant. Trifles of course.

Im afraid any logical analysis at this point points to the conclusion that world war is far more probable than not. The supposition that ww3 will not occur is largely supported by the normality bias as a result of nuclear weapon proliferation of the last 7 decades. The argument can be made that we have been in WW3 for a long time as resources particularly energy resources deplete. Up until now there has always been some other chump to pillage or some other ecosystem to rape. Amazon gone. New guinea gone. They stood for eons. Gone in a flash as the truth of exponential function manifests. WW3 starts? When have we left WW3?

Two guys holding cocked guns to each others heads for 70 years. A good run considering. It has not been conducive to the simple solution apparently visible only to village idiots such as myself- trying to get along. Trying to get along. Heresy. The original sin. Weakness. The enemy.

My impression is that the third world war could be highly probable only if Israel pushed its aggressive activities against Iran and, at the same time, if US pushed its aggressive activities against China, supporting Taiwan.
Because at the moment my impression is that Iran and China would not be so happy to stay with Russia for a third world war.
Therefore at the moment there could be the possibility to still make an agreement between Russia and Ukraine.
Also because European and American citizens could be anyway kept quiet in their homes with climate change fears and maybe other virus.
Russia, if Russian territories will be kept free would probably accept an agreement.
If the above is correct, therefore it would all depend if US and Israel wants to do that,
But of course the above are only thoughts.
      So let’s see.

    • World War III seems like a real possibility now, but probably in a different way than we are used to. The more a person understands about the current conflict, the more worrying it becomes.

If we can agree that the genocide cruelty thuggery and totalitarianism commonly represented by the nazis is reprehensible than isnt evaluating whether behavior is reprehensible on its own merits rather than calling on stereotypes healthy behavior?

Just for a hint in identifying propaganda the three most common stereotypes used are Einstein Jesus and Hitler.

You wouldnt support xxxx would you?
You wouldnt disagree with xxx would you?

Thus actual issues and behavior are nicely sidestepped. Personally I dont have a lot of respect for individuals who apply stereotypes and sidestep issues and behavior as they are working against solutions and for conflict. One might even consider this a core concept of nazi ideology as we understand it.

Since you brought up associations of Hitler and nazis here is the long history of the Ukraine nationalism that allied with the nazi regime and continue to share much of its ideology including a hatred of both Jews and Slavs. I however do not fall into the camp that all Ukrainian military are Banderites. Portraying all Ukrainians as Banderites is just as dark as using the Hitler stereotype to place a hit on a opposition leader. During war all troops dehumanize the enemy. War draws on things in the human psyche that are dark. IMO the solution to war is not to characterize one side as righteous and the other as evil. There are issues and issues need to try to find solutions. To try to get along. Cheap one liners delivered to characterize opposition as “evil” as “hitlers” are de facto avocations of the genocide of war. Its part of the process of getting humans to kill each other racism being a even greater component.

I actually dont have a problem with nationalism as long as it doesnt incorporate hate for another race or nation. I think the hate and aggression is what is despicable.

          https://www.bitchute.com/video/boEt7wkMjtgu/

From the perspective of what I hold to be moral leaders who characterize opposition as “hitler” are very undesirable and leaders who practice tolerance and look for solutions are very desirable. Because of this I am extremely suspicious of leaders who use stereotypes rather than to talk about their own actions and the solutions they propose. Saddam was a “Hitler”. Qaddafi was a “Hitler”. The reality is applying the “Hitler” label is a a justification of war with the side purpose of justifying the execution of the leader given the label usually under circumstances that would fill the most sadistic of the nazi party with glee. Just to be clear. Saddam actions and behavior in the abuse of his people certainly warranted condemnation but its actions and crimes that should be considered not a hit order. Qaddafi’s hit was a travesty but from the standards of individuals being judged on their actions both hits were unconscionable. Serious questions have to be asked if a representive democracy has any business starting wars ostensiably to carry out hits on those it uses propaganda to characterize as Hitler.

i can’t recall a previous candidate for POTUS leading crowds in chants of ‘lock her up’—can you? Dictators invariably throw their opposition in jail.
(check ‘reliable sources’ for that. Please?)

The USA seems to be heading to the point where they welcome full on dictatorship, seeing ‘democracy’ has having failed. (Which of course it has)

in other words, fascism, as i have been forecasting for several years now.

The voter-illiterates remain convinced that we have a political problem (not just in USA) whereas in fact we have an energy problem, In other words, we can vote prosperity into office. (ie MAGA) Hitler used the same mantra.

(check ‘reliable sources’ again, they are readily available) I remain available to be shown to be in error. Feel free.

Trump was just the (incompetent) precursor of fascism to come.
Those who follow him will know their business.

Politics is an infinite mix. We can all extract aspects which suit our point of view. Fascist inclined leaders have always risen out of the mire

The USA will spawn the worst—unlike all the others, the American version has Theocracy mixed in.

Study history for available information on what happens when the jesusfreaks gain power. Lots of history to draw on there. Totally reliable sources.

Those who seek a fascist autocracy are of course convinced that it will be to their benefit, and detrimental to everyone else.
It most certainly does incorporate ‘hate for others’—- there is no other way it can survive and thrive.
            That is the whole point.
Your ‘win’ must be someone else’s loss.

The USA is on a downward energy spiral (as we all are) This will bring economic chaos. A POTUS (by 2026?) will have no choice but to declare a national emergency and impose martial law. To restore MAGA of course!

Try to think these things through logically.
            Avoid dogma.
