Merry Christmas to All

I plan to write a new post in a few days. For now, I will just leave an open thread.

I hope everyone has happy holidays of whatever type you celebrate. This is a good time to be with family and friends.

About Gail Tverberg

My name is Gail Tverberg. I am an actuary interested in finite world issues - oil depletion, natural gas depletion, water shortages, and climate change. Oil limits look very different from what most expect, with high prices leading to recession, and low prices leading to financial problems for oil producers and for oil exporting countries. We are really dealing with a physics problem that affects many parts of the economy at once, including wages and the financial system. I try to look at the overall problem.

Quebec judge removes unvaccinated father’s right to visit child

“[…] it would normally have been in the child’s best interest to have contact with his father, but not in his best interest to have contact with him if he is unvaccinated and opposed to health measures in the current epidemiological context”, judge Jean-Sébastien Vaillancourt wrote in his December 23rd opinion.

The mother and father had a previously agreed-upon visitation schedule, but their agreement was taken in front of the courts after the father asked for one additional day with his 12-year old child during the holidays.

The mother opposed the additional day and asked the court to revoke entirely the father’s visitation rights after learning that he had not received the COVID-19 vaccine.

Despite prediction Omicron could infect half of Europe, residents bristle at new vaccine mandates

In Europe, where the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus led to 7.4 million new reported cases of COVID-19 this past week, Dr. Hans Kluge, regional director of the World Health Organization Europe, made a startling announcement on Tuesday. Given the “new West-to-East tidal wave” across the continent, his agency believes that more than half of Europeans could “be infected in the next six to eight weeks.”

Even before Kluge’s dire warning, however, harsh COVID restrictions were going into effect in Europe. On Monday, for example, Italians awoke to a new reality: Unless they are fully vaccinated against COVID or recently recovered, they can no longer go to restaurants or bars, nor can they even use public transport — even if they show proof of a negative PCR test. Italy’s government also this week made vaccination compulsory for those over 50.

Vaccines are required in Greece for citizens over the age of 60, and starting next month in Austria inoculations will be mandated for those 14 and up. Noncompliant Austrians face fines of more than $4,000.

For many Europeans, these moves seem downright draconian.

“Now I can’t even go to the bank or the barber,” said Renzo, a 40-something antiques dealer in Florence who has resisted getting inoculated with an mRNA vaccine over fears they were rushed out too quickly. “I can only go out to the supermarket or the pharmacy. It feels like I’m under house arrest.”

But with more countries enacting harsh restrictions to try to slow the spread of the virus, Europe is quickly becoming off-limits for the unjabbed, and sparking a backlash in the process.

“In general,” Finnish sociologist Niko Pyröhen, a senior researcher at the University of Helsinki, told Yahoo News that Europeans “don’t want to see all these regulations and restrictions. They just want to get their vaccines, and then they want it to be done.”

Renzo added that he knows people, including his cousin, who are purposely “trying to get COVID,” solely because being recently recovered allows them to get Italy’s latest health pass without getting vaccinated. “It’s crazy,” he said.

U.S. Steel selects site for new advanced steelmaking facility

By Jordyn Hronec – Digital Producer, Pittsburgh Business Times
    Jan 11, 2022
Pittsburgh-based United States Steel Corp. announced on Tuesday it has selected a location to build a new, $3 billion technologically advanced steel mill.

The new mill will be located in Osceola, Arkansas, which, combined with the company’s nearby Big River Steel plant, will form a 6.3 million ton mega mill.

The new facility will feature two electric arc furnaces with 3 million tons per year of steelmaking capacity. The facility will also have an endless casting and rolling line — the first use of the technology in the United States — and advanced finishing capabilities. The project is expected to break ground in the first quarter of 2022 and finish in 2024. Once completed, the facility will apply for LEED certification.

The location will utilize renewable power from Entergy Arkansas and Class 1 rail service from BNSF Railway.

U.S. Steel President and CEO David Burritt said the construction of the new facility and mega mill in Arkansas will be one that offers the company “incomparable advantages,” including a more resilient supply chain.

“The State of Arkansas, Mississippi County, the City of Osceola, Entergy, BNSF and other parties have all worked to make this the clear choice for a path to the future without roadblocks,” Burritt said. “We’re not going to make our stakeholders wait to see progress. We intend to break ground this quarter and get to work as soon as permits are in hand.”

Leaders in Arkansas also expressed their support of the new project, with Gov. Asa Hutchinson citing the high-paying jobs the facility will bring to the region. The state’s Secretary of Commerce, Mike Preston, also praised the decision.

“Not only does Arkansas have a trained workforce, a reliable electrical grid and easy access to river, rail and highways, but it also has a governor, a General Assembly, and numerous community partners and stakeholders who recognize the importance of broadening economic opportunities for Arkansans and who will go the extra mile to compete for those opportunities,” Preston said. “U.S. Steel is a highly regarded member of the state’s business community, and we are excited to continue our partnership with them as they establish the most advanced steelmaking facility in North America — right here in Arkansas.”

BAU is not going down without a fight…electric arc furnace!!! LEED certified!!! Powered by renewable energy!! What possibly could go wrong… 😬 Oops they located it in Arkansas 🤣😅

Hey, I STILL watch the reruns

    • Let’s hope they can find both the material for building the new facility and the materials for creating the steel. Also required are the energy products (mostly oil) for transporting goods both to the new plant and to the customer.

      • Dennis L. says:

Jobs lead to votes, votes lead to power, power is projected by the state with its monopoly of violence, raw materials appear. Lobbying cost is a fixed part of running a steel mill. Political and economic power are two sides of a coin, a one sided coin is difficult to imagine.

        Always the optimist.

Idea copied from Dalio’s latest book.

        Dennis L.

        • ok up to the point where ‘raw materials appear’

if they appear they are taken from somewhere else, or are dug out of the ground

if a monopoly of violence is involved, that would suggest slave labour to some degree, unless i’m missing a subtle point there.

I would suggest that power is only necessary to be ‘projected by the state’ if the state itself is failing—ie available resources do not match social aspirations..

it is at that point that state violence takes over to insist that the opposite is the case–like now.

For a century we have been living in a dreamworld, where infinite abundance is consistently promised.
That is now clearly a lie

so state violence is the only course of action available to promote ‘alternative facts’.

that if insufficient resources are not available, there must be a conspiracy in denying them to us

An alert reader pointed me to a key statement in a document published by OraSure Technologies, a manufacturer of a rapid COVID test. The document is posted on an FDA web page.
It is titled, “IntellSwab COVID-19 Rapid Test—Healthcare Provider Instructions for Use.”
The key quote occurs in a section headlined, Limitations of the Test:

“Potential cross reactivity of the InteliSwab™ COVID-19 Rapid Test with COVID-19 vaccines or therapeutics has not been evaluated.”

In the medical community, the term “cross reactivity” is universally understood. It means: a test designed to detect whether X is present in a person’s body is, in fact, detecting Y, an entirely irrelevant item, BUT is mistakenly calling it X.
And in this document I just quoted, the manufacturer readily admits it hasn’t looked into the possibility that the COVID test is reacting to the COVID VACCINE and then mistakenly stating the vaccinated person has THE VIRUS in his body. So the question is: why hasn’t the manufacturer looked into this cross reactivity issue? The document shows tests for all sorts of other possible cross reactivity.
And the next question is: how can the FDA grant emergency use authorization for this rapid test, when cross reactivity with the vaccine hasn’t been explored?
I’ll give you one educated speculation about cross reactivity. The COVID test is looking for a piece of RNA ASSUMED to be part of “the virus.” The vaccine contains some part of that RNA-piece. Therefore, when the test is run—depending on the sensitivity of the test—many previously vaccinated people are going to be “positive” for “the virus.” … It’s all fun and games—if you consider destruction of lives fun and games.

    • I found this article in PLOS “NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES.” It was published yesterday, January 10, 2022.

“Spatiotemporal association of rapid urbanization and water-body distribution on hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome: A case study in the city of Xi’an, China”

The article is peer reviewed, but is an uncorrected proof.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a zoonosis characterized by clinical features of high fever, hemorrhage, and renal damage. China has the largest number of HFRS cases worldwide, accounting for over 90% of the total reported cases. In this paper, we used surveyed HFRS data and satellite imagery to conduct geostatistical analysis for investigating the associations of rapid urbanization, water bodies, and other factors on the spatiotemporal dynamics of HFRS from year 2005 to 2018 in Xi’an City, Northwest China. The results revealed an evident epidemic aggregation in the incidence of HFRS within Xi’an City with a phenomenal fluctuation in periodic time series. Rapid urbanization was also found to greatly affect the HFRS incidence in two different time phases. HFRS caused by urbanization influences farmers to a lesser extent than it does to non-farmers. The association of water bodies with the HFRS incidence rate was found to be higher within the radii of 696.15 m and 1575.39 m, which represented significant thresholds. The results also showed that geomatics approaches can be used for spatiotemporally investigating the HFRS dynamic characteristics and supporting effective allocations of resources to formulate strategies for preventing epidemics.

So, this is a study based on old data of rising cases, long before COVID came along.

      The Introduction starts out:

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a zoonosis caused by Hantaviruses (family Bunyaviridae) [1–3]. This disease is clinically characterized by fever, hemorrhage, and renal dysfunction, with a fatality rate of 0.5%–40% depending on the specific viral strain involved [4]. Hantaviruses could be transmitted from the infected reservoir hosts to humans when the latter comes in contact with the contaminated saliva, urine, or excreta or by inhaling virus-contaminated aerosols [5]. People living in poor conditions and working in crowded places are more vulnerable to hantaviruses because they are frequently exposed to the body fluids and excreta of infected rodents [5,6]. HFRS has been recognized as a severe global public health problem as approximately 60,000–100,000 HFRS cases are reported annually by more than 70 underdeveloped countries in Asia and Europe [7,8]. Since the 1950s, China has reported over 1.56 million HFRS cases with a fatality rate of nearly 3.0%, accounting for 90% of the total reported cases worldwide [9]. Accordingly, Chinese government has carried out some effective initiatives for the prevention and control of HFRS, such as tracking changes in the habitats of rodents, sharing epidemic information with the general public, improving living and working conditions of its people, and implementing free vaccination drives. However, HFRS still remains one of the top nine communicable diseases in mainland China, and it continues to reemerge in certain epidemic-prone areas, especially in the northeastern and northwestern provinces, posing a serious long-term danger to public health and safety.

      • Student says:

In this situation everything can be, I’m no longer surprised of anything, but I wonder how can start in China that kind of virus because of mass vaccination if China didn’t make mass vaccination.

He has nothing to do with resource depletion or how to obtain it.

A fact of a lot of ‘smarties’ and high IQ people is that in many cases their intelligence is worse than useless.

The Chinese selected Mandarins about how well they can recite the words of Confucian philosophers who lived 6th Century BCE, and about how well they could write stuff in a prescribed form. That did not prepare them against the English attacks in 1839 since Confucius never had anything to say about England, Steamships or modern cannon.

Today’s financial whizs have nothing to say about the lack of resources and the breakdown of the transportation system. They will make a lot of money, but if their wealth increase by 50% while the price of yachts increase by 100%, per say, what good is there?

Since then, the trades of Fed Chair Jerome Powell, a wealthy former private-equity executive, and Vice-Chair Richard Clarida have come under scrutiny, leading to calls from Senator Elizabeth Warren for the Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate.

Of course, Fed officials aren’t the only Washington insiders who had access to market-moving information during the pandemic. A surprisingly large number of Congress members also appeared to have been able to use their inside knowledge for financial gain while unemployed Americans were lining up at food banks. Norman’s naivety about sources is, of course, another issue entirely.

back to those ‘millions of dead and maimed’ are we?

sources are amazing. what would we do without them.

Once again Norman you indulge in your shenanigans of taking a argument exaggerating it so it is no longer reasonable and saying its the same as the original argument. It is not behavior that creates respect. That you have to do this to soothe your emotional nexus communicates much.

Tony Fauci is directly responsible for the creation of Covid through the NIH funding of Eco alliance. He has been a outspoken advocate of gain of function research as evidenced by HIs Washington Post article “a risk worth taking” and many many other documents. This apparently was a attempt to prevent the gain of function research ban from occurring in the USA a attempt that failed. Fauci then moved his gain of function research to China, The rest is history. The contents of the peer reviewed documents along with the detailed NIH grants and now released military documents leave no serious discussion about covids origin.

When academics with the most prestigious credentials came forth with any discussion that is contrary to his narrative he attacked and silenced them. This is suppression of science. BAU in the swamp.

Here in the USA we have this family called the Kennedys. Perhaps you have heard of them? Robert Kennedys jr book outlines Fauci total ownership by big pharma.

To me the scariest thing about Tony Fauci is that he has not been held accountable. Why has there not been a congressional investigation on these matters? Unfortunately it might seem that the liability for covid falls squarely on both China but more so on the USA governmental agencies that funded the creation of the lab and the research. Tony gets a pass by default.

The truth about Tony Fauci lies in the peer reviewed research papers and the NIH grants. These documents are not disputed. That the system is unable to face up to its responsibilities in these matters is extremely troubling.

Until the public is informed about the origin of covid and the risks of Gain of function research a reasonable dialogue about whether it benefits mankind can not occur. Its clear technology will accelerate in this area one way or another. We seem to be detached from the decisions that have effect on humanities fate both by the nature of maximum power principle and decisions made by elites. Tony Fauci is only a symptom not the problem.

Now Fauci becomes a brand named product that you eithor “like” or “dont like”. A binary tribal belonging indicator. Should Tony Fauci be fired? Absolutely but to think that the problem is solved by that action would be incorrect. The bigger problem is that humans dont own technology it owns us.

            • >>>>taking a argument exaggerating it so it is no longer reasonable,,<<<<>>>>Tony Fauci is directly responsible for the creation of Covid<<<<<<<

Given the historic and acknowledged under-reporting factor of the MHRA system, that’s at least 25,000 and quite plausibly as many as 75,000 in reality.

Never earlier in mankind’s history has a, for all practical intents and purposes, novel gene therapy been introduced on such a scale without rigorous clinical trials. Specially long term studies of severe side effects such as infertility and an immune defense rendered ineffective.

      Objective fact #2:

The experimental gene therapy seem to offer protection against severe illness due to its effect of priming the immune defense with spike protein cannon fodder.

      Objective fact #3:

The long term side effects of catching and recovering from Covid is unknown. Long Covid seems an indisputable fact.

  29. Tim Groves says:

Here’s an upbeat prediction about the pandemic: we could be at the beginning of the end already.

Notes from a call with Edward Ryan MD, Director of International Infectious Disease at Massachusetts General Hospital:

1 Close to 100% of the positive cases in MA are Omicron. Delta is almost completely gone from New England.

2 This surge will peak sometime between 1/10 and 1/21 and then begin a quick downhill journey of two to four weeks.

3 We will end up with a 20-50% positivity rate.

4 February will be clean up mode, March will begin to return to “normal”

5 Omicron lives in your nose and upper respiratory area which is what makes it so contagious. It isn’t able to bond with your lungs like the other variants.

6 The increased hospitalizations should be taken with a grain of salt as most of them are secondary admissions (i.e. people coming in for surgery, broken bones, etc. who are tested for COVID)

7 We won’t need a booster for omicron because they wouldn’t be able to develop one before it’s completely gone and we’re all going to get it which will give us the immunity we need to get through it.

8 COVID will join the 4 other coronaviruses we deal with that cause the common cold, upper respiratory infections, RSV, etc. It will become a pediatric disease mainly affecting young children with no immunity.

9 40% of those infected will be asymptomatic

10 Rapid tests are 50-80% sensitive to those with symptoms, only 30-60% sensitive to those without symptoms

11 Contact tracing is worthless because we’re all going to get it and there’s no way we could keep up with it.

12 We are fighting the last war with COVID and should be pivoting back to normal life, but society isn’t quite ready for it yet.

13 There is no need to stay home from work or to be a hermit unless you’re immunocompromised or 85 or older, but he does recommend staying away from large gatherings for the next six weeks.

14 Spring/Summer will be really nice

    • davidinamonthorayearoradecade says:

so will this lead to the swift end of the global vaccine program which has now been shown to be a total failure?

“… there is no harm in getting vaccinated in order to fit in with the governmental views and be able to get around more easily than the unvaccinated.”

    • This forecast sounds fairly reasonable. The folks involved with mandating vaccines will have an increasingly difficult time making a case for vaccination. In fact, Fauci will likely quietly, or not so quietly, disappear from the scene.

      • Fast Eddy says:

I am not seeing any indications that the Scamdemic is losing steam… if anything it’s heating up …

We should also be seeing a lot more boosted celebs in body bags before Northern Hemisphere winter is over. That should help bring a halt to this phase of the reset.

I’m not an optimist by nature, so the above is largely wishful thinking. I’m just so tired of sitting through this movie and raring to get on to the next big thing.

        I’ll pay 10K! 😉

there is no assurance that omicron means the end of the so-called pandemic.

it’s obvious that there will be future variants of SARS2 and the “next” variant could be more severe, though no variant has been very severe except to the elderly and fattties and those with other comorbidities.

I do expect the next dominant variant to circulate the globe before the end of 2022.

        no big deal.

IF omicron indeed is the beginning of the endemic phase, and all future variants remain mild, even then I would support your idea that this won’t bring back the “old happy normal”.

        that ain’t never coming back.

though it should bring an end to the totally failed global vaccine program.

“… there is no harm in getting vaccinated in order to fit in with the governmental views and be able to get around more easily than the unvaccinated.”

        • JMS says:

I suspect the global vaccine program wasn’t meant for something as poor as failure. Very much on the contraire. In fact, the program has everything to be successful, whatever its ultimate goals are.

          • davidinamonthorayearoradecade says:

            could be.

maybe mass infertility is the goal, and a bonus is the collateral damage of huge numbers of vaxicides.

then all the 2021/2022 damage is “success” to those in charge of the program.

maybe we’ll get more clues throughout this year.

Today, not even five weeks later, and barely 24 hours after Pfizer’s CEO downplayed a fourth dose, they said they think frequent boosters may not be safe:,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/

What changed? What data have they seen since Dec. 9? Animal studies? Side effect reports? Epidemiological data? Or is this just an abundance of caution – caution that did not exist last month?

The time for obfuscation and deception is over. Hundreds of millions of people across the United States and Europe have received mRNA boosters.

Repeat booster doses every four months could eventually weaken the immune system and tire out people, according to the European Medicines Agency. Instead, countries should leave more time between booster programs and tie them to the onset of the cold season.”

Well, that’s pretty timely. Coinciding with the death of the President of the European Parliament, who was one of the chief pushers of vaccine passports, after two weeks in hospital with what the BBC described as a serious complication with his immune system.

“Since the pandemic began, until now, I was in a position to see every single sudden death file that came through our detachment area. What did I notice in this position? Nothing. No upwards trend whatsoever. Funny enough, I didn’t see people dropping dead in my neighbourhood either.
This was a very stark contrast to what I saw in media. A non-stop chorus on TV, radio, and internet, of case counts, hospitalizations and deaths. At no time in my life had I seen anything like it. A complete disconnect between my observed reality and that which was portrayed by my government and the government subsidized mainstream media. And they were reporting deaths in care homes. Care homes? When did the media ever report deaths in care homes unless it was some sort of instance of gross negligence? It’s called end of life care for a reason. People go to care homes at the end of their life. Death is the natural consequence, and this fact used to be understood as common sense.”

Amazing … doctors and nurses would obviously be aware of the influx of vaxxidents… yet they continue to say nothing … and continue to jab…

The mind is a powerful thing… it can rationalize and justify just about anything.

    • I think this fellow is confused, even if his story sounds compelling. A person has to look at the numbers to see what is going wrong. Steve Kirsch should have done some elementary checking of numbers before he put the post up.

If the world population is 7,794,798,739, then the number of additional deaths to increase the percentage dying in a given year by 0.01% would be 779,480.

There are various estimates of the number of deaths from COVID. Just using the number of reported death counts gives something over 5 million for 2020 and 2021 combined. Using some estimates based on an analysis of The Economist ( ), total excess deaths of all kinds could to as many as 20 million, again over the two years combined. For a single year (that is, considering 2020 or 2021), excess deaths are thus between 2.5 million and 10 million.

If deaths increased by between 2.5 and 10.0 million each year, they increased by a great deal more than 0.01%, comparing these amounts to the required number of 779,480 to move the percentage by .01%. In fact, it looks like they would increase the expected number dying each from 0.76% to something between 0.79% and 0.89%. Evidently, the numbers the RMPC officer is working with are someone’s guesstimate of deaths for 2020 and 2021. The person making the model probably picked the percentage 0.76% based on past deaths, and figured that would be a sufficiently good estimate for deaths for 2020 and 2021. They don’t have any estimate of actual deaths included.

      • Mike Roberts says:

Very good, Gail. A bit of fact checking is worth it but many here don’t want to spend the time. The World Mortality Dataset showed 4 million excess deaths for 2020 and half of 2021. Excess deaths means that the mortality rate must have increased from the norm. The article that Fast Eddy linked to doesn’t show any data sources so Steve Kirsch is just taking that RCMP officer’s word for it. As you say, he should have done some elementary checking, as should have Fast Eddy.

      • Xabier says:

        God analysis, Gail, thanks.

Personally, I am much more interested in serious side-effects in younger people at this stage, encompassing an enormous range of conditions, than in deaths. And with the looming digitised tyranny and abolition of all human rights.

The ‘everyone’s going to die in 6 months’ meme has been over-worked, nor have I ever subscribed to it.

Very many have died, of course, far beyond historic threshholds for the withdrawal of drugs.

This indicates the utter corruption of the health bureaucracies, and that the compromised regulators have become the threat themselves.

The big game is more cunning and subtle than a massive short-term wave of death.

It’s like hog-shooting: you don’t start shooting them all until the cage is full of hogs happily feeding on the bait.

But hogs can’t be fooled like humans: as soon a one has been shot and falls dead, they will try to escape knowing what is about to happen.

We, however, can be fooled with massaged statistics and brain-washing while the killing goes on out of sight.

  34. Xabier says:

In an interview with CNBC, Jan 10th, Albert Bourla admitted in passing that ‘the vaccines do not have the safety profile we hope for with this technology’.

    An important admission.

Of course he can cover himself with the old lie that ‘the benefits outweigh the risk’.

At the same time he is talking about knocking this poisonous crap out in even shorter phases of development.

Pretty much confirms that they are running experiments on us – but the next will cause fewer casualties (hopefully).

    • JMS says:

Mr. Burla knows that plausible deniability is indispensable when you still live in a regime of republican scrutiny. Hopefully in the next stage, tyranny, such precautions will no longer be necessary. In the meantime, few things would give me more pleasure than to see Burla’s neck in a blunt gillotine.

    • The article talks about “productive activity that stays within planetary boundaries.” I would expect that as a practical matter, everything that it made or consumed will have to result from activity strictly within New Zealand’s borders. That would mean doing without oil, imported food, and replacement parts for practically anything that breaks. Transportation would likely come to a halt. Electric power lines needing repairs could not be fixed. Even if coal could be mined, it likely couldn’t be transported anywhere. New Zealand would come to a complete halt.

Whether or not people will need to be perpetually boosting against the coronavirus and its seemingly never-ending stream of variants remains unknown, but vaccine manufacturers are already preparing for a possible need for additional boosters in the fall.

“We have to be prepared for whatever evolution gives us,” said Moderna (MRNA) CEO Stéphane Bancel.

Both CEOs say it is unclear what the needs for boosters or variant-specific vaccines will be by the end of the year.

Bancel said he is speaking with public health leaders in the U.S., U.K., and other countries, to understand how the company should be preparing for a fall 2022 booster.

He has signed contracts for $18.5 billion in doses for 2022, an increase of $1.5 billion from late 2021, highlighting the ongoing concerns that countries’ health officials have about the pandemic and a need to have boosters handy.

Recently the CDC reduced booster windows from the primary course to 5 months, to account for waning antibody protection by the vaccines. …

Yep 👍😁 Big Money 💰 in making us safe from a cold virus variant
