A common belief is that if the world does not have adequate energy, the result will be high prices. These high prices will allow more fossil fuels to be extracted or will allow renewables to substitute for fossil fuels.
In my view, the real issue is quite different: Inadequate energy supply of the types the economy requires can be expected to affect the economy in a way that causes it to become “unglued.” The economy will gradually fall apart as infighting becomes more of a problem. Goods won’t necessarily be high-priced; many simply won’t be available at any price. Political parties will fragment. Conflict within countries, such as the recent Wagner conflict with the military leadership in Russia, will become more common.
It has become fashionable to use models to predict the future, but simple models do not consider real-world dynamics. They don’t consider the importance of already existing infrastructure and the types of energy products this infrastructure requires. They don’t consider the importance of continuing food production. They don’t consider the dynamics of “not enough goods and services to go around.”
In this post, I will look at some pieces of evidence that suggest we should expect the world economy to become unglued as limits are hit. A corollary is that we cannot expect a transition to a world powered by renewables to work.
[1] It is easy to show that the energy supplies of a finite world will eventually fall short.
Anyone can model the energy supplies of a finite world as a bucket of sand and a scooper. If the scooper is used to remove the sand from the bucket, it will eventually become empty. If we start with a larger bucket of sand, perhaps the process can be delayed. Or, if we use a smaller scooper, the process will be delayed. But the result will be the same.
Back in 1957, Rear Admiral Hyman Rickover of the US Navy gave a speech in which he said,
For it is an unpleasant fact that according to our best estimates, total fossil fuel reserves recoverable at not over twice today’s unit cost, are likely to run out at some time between the years 2000 and 2050, if present standards of living and population growth rates are taken into account.
In this speech, Rickover pointed out the importance of fossil fuels to maintain our standard of living and to win wars. It was clear to the military that fossil fuel energy supplies were tremendously important in preventing future problems for the economy.
[2] History shows that economies tend to grow and eventually collapse.
Economies tend to operate in cycles, as illustrated in Figure 1.
The eight economies analyzed by Turchin and Nefedov moved into a new area or acquired a new energy resource. These economies tended to grow for a long periods, well over 100 years, until the populations hit the carrying capacity of the available resources. These economies were able to work around these resource limits during a period of Stagflation, which typically lasted about 50 to 60 years. Eventually, the problems became too great to be overcome. A Crisis Period of falling population and GDP, lasting 20 to 50 years, typically ensued.
[3] The world economy today seems to be following a similar cycle based on its use of fossil fuels. In fact, we seem to be in the Crisis Period of such a cycle.
Today’s fossil fuel-based world economy started growing at varying times, in various places around the world, becoming well established by the early 1800s. It seems to have hit a Stagflation Period between 1970 and 1980. Recent patterns in oil supply per capita, interest rates, and debt levels suggest to me that the world economy has entered the Crisis Period of the current cycle.
To me, oil supply, particularly crude oil supply, is exceptionally important in keeping the economy growing because it is heavily used in producing the food supply and transporting it to market. In fact, it is heavily used in transportation of all kinds. We can see what is going wrong by looking at the trend in crude oil per capita (blue line on Figure 2).
On Figure 2, a line is drawn at 2005, when many people believe that peak “conventional” oil was reached. The line at 2009 points out the long-term slide in oil consumption per capita between 2005 and 2009, related at least in part to the Great Recession of 2008-2009. There was another steep drop in crude oil per capita in 2020, and this drop has not been made up. Cutbacks in drilling and low oil prices suggest that per capita consumption may never recover to the 2018 level.
US interest rates over time indicate a clear up and down pattern, with increases to 1981, and mostly decreases since then (Figure 3). Raising interest rates is like putting brakes on the economy because it makes monthly payments on loans higher. Lowering interest rates is like pressing on the accelerator.
The US was in a Stagflation Period after 1980. Lower interest rates helped push the economy along, at least until they could go no lower. The first place falling interest rates stalled was in 2008, when they hit zero for the shortest-term debt. About the beginning of 2021, interest rates started to rise, to try to stop inflation.
At the same time, the US’s ability to add to debt, except US government debt, seems to have stalled about 2008 and again in 2021.
The combination of Figures 2, 3, and 4 suggests that the world economy has been on shaky ground since 2008. The US economy has been operating with incredibly low interest rates. If the world loses the ability to hide energy problems behind ever-lower interest and ever-higher debt, (particularly government debt), many parts of the economy could start coming apart.
[4] The world’s total energy supply must increase at least as fast as population to keep the economy growing and away from collapse.
A couple of years ago, I did an analysis of the growth in energy consumption compared to the growth of population over the period 1820 to 2020. I found that when energy consumption was rising faster than population, there tended to be a rise in standards of living. When energy consumption grew only as fast as population, problematic things (such as wars and governmental collapses) tended to happen (Figure 5).
On Figure 5, the sum of red and blue areas represents world energy consumption growth by 10-year periods. The blue areas represent population growth percentages during these 10-year periods. The red area is determined by subtraction. It represents the amount of energy consumption growth that is “left over” for growth in standards of living. When growth in energy consumption was inadequate, wars tended to take place, and the collapse of the central government of the Soviet Union took place.
We are now at a point where energy consumption may decrease dramatically in future years, especially if we attempt to convert to a system based on intermittent wind and solar. The drop in energy consumption, relative to population, would likely be far worse than any situation we have experienced in the past. Besides being inadequate in quantity, wind and solar are not adapted to handling our most basic need, which is for providing the inputs farmers require to provide us with food.
[5] A key to understanding the role of fuels of the right kinds is understanding the physics-based way that the economy operates.
The economy is very much like the human body. The operation of both is governed by the laws of physics. The human body needs to consume a variety of food products. Alternative foods can be substituted, but the overall quantity of food needs to be sufficient for the population and their level of activity.
Likewise, the world economy requires a variety of energy products to operate. Substitutions can sometimes be made, but the overall quantity must be sufficient to support the activities of the economy, including providing adequate food and water for the population and ways to transport these items to the population that needs them.
There are other similarities, as well. Humans start out as small babies. Eventually, humans grow old. In the years leading up to death, they often become frail. The cycle downward at the end of an economy’s life is somewhat similar. Economies, even the world economy, cannot last forever.
[6] To build and maintain cities, it is necessary for energy to be easily storable.
In his book, Against the Grain, the American political scientist James C. Scott points out that in order for governments to grow and to provide infrastructure for cities, it is necessary to tax farmers. Grain is ideal for this; taxing a root crop such as sweet potatoes does not work well. Root crops are hard to see when they are growing. They also are harder to transport and store.
Clearly, farmers must have a surplus of storable energy to make cities and good roads work. They must be able to produce this surplus energy in a sufficiently profitable way that governments can tax it and use the proceeds for the benefit of the overall population.
I think that excess storable energy is the true “net energy” that some authors write about. A city cannot operate only when the wind happens to be blowing or the sun happens to be shining. Everyone would clog the roads at the same time, trying to get to a job that might last only a few minutes. Even today, if a city is to have electricity when it is needed, even in winter, there needs to be a storable supply of fuel to provide this electricity. Batteries cannot provide this level of storage; we would run out of materials.
Cities are essential for the sharing of ideas and for the operation of major industries.
We can have an economy of hunter-gatherers running on intermittent energy alone. We might even be able to have cities based on stored grain, as civilizations did in the past. But the population would need to be far less than today’s 8 billion.
[7] Both energy density and storability are needed if the world’s population is to be fed.
A farmer needs machines that are not so heavy that they will sink into the soil. Soil compaction is also an issue with heavy machines. If soil is compacted, water cannot make its way through the pores properly. Rain will tend to run off, causing erosion, instead of sinking in, to provide longer-term benefit. Soil compaction is already a problem with today’s large machinery. Less dense fuels, or the use of heavy battery packs, will make the problem even worse.
Energy dense fuel is also needed for the transportation of food. In fact, energy dense fuel, such as diesel or jet fuel, is used in nearly all of today’s very large vehicles. Heavy vehicles operated in situations that require very large bursts of power especially need energy dense fuel. Examples include semi-trailer trucks, buses that drive up steep hills, airplanes that need bursts of power to take off, agricultural vehicles that might get stuck in mud, and vehicles used in construction and road making.
Trains operating on smooth tracks, with limited gradients, don’t need the same bursts of power, so they are sometimes electric. Boats don’t generally need large bursts of power, but boats generally use an energy-dense liquid fuel to propel them on long journeys. Storing enough electricity in batteries to power such long journeys would be impractical.
The recently published 2023 Statistical Review of World Energy (now produced by the Energy Institute, instead of BP) shows that the heavier, more energy-dense types of burnable oil have been falling as a share of the world’s oil supply.
These heavier grades are the ones best suited to essential future energy needs, and they seem to be depleting the most quickly.
[8] Added complexity is deceptive. It looks like it can save energy, but it tends to increase wage disparities and makes the overall system more fragile.
Added complexity for an economy includes changes such as more built infrastructure (roads, dams, bridges), larger businesses, more specialization of workers, more international trade, and longer supply chains. It is easy for modelers to assume that these changes have no energy cost, but in reality, they do.
Changes enabling growing complexity go hand in hand with more debt and more financialization of the economy. With greater complexity, owners and managers of businesses, as well as highly trained workers, tend to receive a disproportionate share of the wealth. This means that little is left over for non-elite workers. These wage and wealth disparities lead to the unhappiness of the lower-paid workers. This is especially the case during economic downturns.
With added complexity, the system becomes more fragile. Supply lines become longer, so missing parts are more likely to be a problem. Repair parts for wind turbines may become unavailable, for example. The US grid would need massive improvements to handle the proposed increase in wind and solar power, and the demands of EVs. All of the simultaneous commodity demands may become too much for suppliers to meet.
Even changes in financial systems could be a serious problem. With the conflict over the SWIFT money processing system, will one group of countries start using a different financial exchange program, such as Iran’s financial messaging system SEPAM? Will Western nations find themselves cut off from purchasing inputs they depend upon?
[9] Modeling underlying the analysis for the 1972 book The Limits to Growth shows that (total materials required for reinvestment each year) as a percentage of (total economic output) is an important limit.
Somehow, the economy must provide enough goods and services both for the needs of the current members of the economy and for the investment needed to keep the system operating in the future.
The economy is squeezed in three different ways:
- The population keeps growing, and each person needs food, clothing, and a variety of services.
- Resources of all kinds (not just fossil fuels) become more difficult to extract due to depletion. More of the output of the economy needs to go into investment, just to get the same quantity of copper, lithium, nickel, and minerals of all kinds, including fossil fuels.
- With the rising population and increasing resource use, pollution becomes a bigger problem. Mitigation efforts lead to a need to use more resources to keep pollution away from humans.
To keep the system operating, we cannot spend very much on the combination of resource extraction and pollution control, or there will not be enough resources left to meet the needs of the growing population.
This combination limit tells me is that a rapid transition of any kind toward any new energy type, even toward the use of “green energy,” is not likely to work well. There is a reason why past transitions to new energy types have been very slow. The economy cannot invest enough without starving other parts of the economy.
Some people have interpreted this combination limit as an Energy Return on Energy Investment limit of perhaps 10:1, but it seems to me to be a far more serious limit than this. At a minimum, all types of resources, including those for backup batteries and additional long distance transmission lines, must be included in any calculation for renewables.
Also, to keep the system operating, any shift from fossil fuels to renewables cannot have a delayed payback period, relative to fossil fuels, or the huge up-front investment will become a problem. The up-front investment in renewables will be higher, but there will not be enough output to support the economy. The “real” economy does not operate on an accrual basis; people need to eat every day, and aluminum smelters expect to operate every day.
As I mentioned previously, renewables aren’t really helpful for growing food. Nor are reliable enough to power aluminum smelters, so there is a real issue as to whether they should even be considered as possible substitutes for fossil fuels. They are simply add-ons to the fossil fuel system to avoid having to talk about our fossil fuel supply problems. Reframing the issue as “wanting to move away from fossil fuels to prevent climate change” saves having to talk about the inadequate fossil fuel supply problem, and the fact that fossil fuels are what make today’s lifestyle possible.
[10] Energy prices must be both high enough for producers to make a profit and low enough for consumers to afford goods made with these energy products.
It is the conflict between the needs of consumers and producers that tends to bring fossil fuel energy production down. Consumers say, “We can’t stand oil (or natural gas or electricity) prices this high, and demand that politicians hold prices down.” In fact, this just recently happened in Australia with natural gas prices. Without an adequate profit motive, drillers cut back on drilling and production falls.
Renewables have gotten mandates and subsidies, especially the subsidy of going first on the electric grid. It is these subsidies and mandates that have made investments in wind turbines and solar panels attractive. Once governments have more financial problems and these subsidies disappear, owners are likely to stop making repairs to these systems. They will not last longer than fossil fuel-based systems, in my opinion.
[11] Conclusion: We are in uncharted territory.
I mentioned that the Great Recession of 2008-2009 seemed to mark the beginning of the downturn. More financial problems are no doubt ahead, but other kinds of strange events may also occur.
It seems possible that Covid, its vaccines, and the restrictions in 2020 may even have been part of the “ungluing.” Self-organizing physics-based systems act strangely. World oil supply started declining in 2019. Militaries around the world have been concerned about fossil fuel limits for many years. Militaries have also been deeply involved with germ warfare. Economies around the world were experiencing financial problems. The shutdowns conveniently reduced demand and prices for oil, while giving economies around the world an excuse for more debt. The problems were kicked down the road until 2022 and 2023, when they reappeared as inflation.
We can’t know what lies ahead, but it may be very strange, indeed.
What would happen if we gain the riches of the space? Will it improve the peoples’ lot?

Let’s say the top 1% owns 50 and the rest owns 50. This is for an illustrative purpose and there are a lot of gradations in the top 1% but for simplicity of argument let’s say that is true.
Space expansion, fusion, etc will increase the wealth. Let’s say 10 fold.
But it will be monopolized by the investors who actually risked their skin on this game.
So, out of 1,000, let’s say 20 went for the wages of the technicians and other staff. Then it becomes

Which is why countries like Russia, who don’t expect to gain anything from the future tech , rebelled when they could and they are about to win.

Kulm, your ignorance is astounding. If you bother to read the article you will find that they had written thousands of books on all sort of subjects, most of them surely technical. Theirs is in fact the superior civilization. They got there first, and first by hundreds or a thousand of years, first. When your ancestors were still chasing elks, one of their emperors decided to collect all books about good governance in a single place. It was 15000 books, long before there was even a single book where you live (not reported in the article). I really enjoy your anecdotal posts. They are involved and intricate which can make it challenging to respond, and expand the topic. It might appear as if there is relatively little interest, but I suspect that isnt the case.
“Woke” is most definitely more of a problem than the human civilizational enterprise running full speed into a basalt cliff the size of Jupiter. It is not possible to bring a primate down from the trees, give it a university diploma and then counting on it not continuing to eye the tree tops as the predators of objective reality roam on the ground.
At least there would be a fighting chance for the young whippersnappers to avoid severe delusion and outright mental illness.

Without doing any detailed research, it seems fairly clear to me that most people in the Third World, the South, the less developed nations, the warmer countries get by on far fewer calories/BTUs than most people in the First World, the North, the industrialized nations, the colder countries do.
The nation with the highest per capita total energy consumption is, by some measures, Iceland, which has been calculated as using the equivalent of 167,175 kWh per person in 2020. Compare this with the nations with the lowest per capita total energy consumption, the Central African Republic, which used 328 kWh per person in 2019 (less than 1 kilowatt hour per day, Burundi, on 319 kWh per person in 2019, and bottom of the heap Somalia, on 236 kWh.

Well, yes, and then again, no. It depends on how the statement is interpreted. A decent lawyer could argue either way and make a good case.
One line of argument might be that, theoretically, small-scale organic farmers COULD produce a lot of food with virtually no fossil fuel inputs given the right supporting conditions. Imagine the whole world resembling Ireland just before the potato famine struck.
Another argument might be that, SINCE the current economic system depends on fossil fuels for most of its energy, and SINCE the current economic system is what has allowed the population to rise to 8 billion, and SINCE a substantial portion of the food required by that 8 billion is fertilized, planted, harvested, stored, processed and distributed using fossil fuels,IF we could no longer have access to fossil fuels, we WOULD experience the mother of all collective Wile E. Coyote moments.

In his most recent video, he takes to Brett Weinstein (another member of the Dark Web) to task and shows the latter up to be a bit of a weasel with words. I like Brett and enjoy listening to him, but I can’t disagree with J.J.’s well-argued criticisms that employ Brett’s own statements against him and illustrate how he he has contradicted himself and attempted to paint his past actions in a light more flattering than the video record shows. I’m sure J.J. Couey would agree that “Covid-19” was deliberately spread, although he might quibble over the terminology and ask what is meant by “Covid-19”.
But more importantly, he has put forward the hypothesis that what was spread initially was not a virus, per se, but an infectious clone.
An infectious clone is a recombinant DNA molecule that contains all the genetic information necessary to generate a specific virus or pathogen. In other words, it is a copy of the viral genome that is capable of generating an infectious virus when introduced into host cells.
Like other RNA viruses, coronaviruses have less than perfect replication fidelity. This is why they mutate so quickly. The replication fidelity of the SARS-Cov-2 virus is reported to be relatively high, with an estimated error rate of about 2 mutations per genome per month. But I suspect J.J. believes it to be much lower.
He gives an analogy of DNA replication being like the digital copying of a CD or DVD, with the copies basically 100% identical to the original, so even a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy should be identical to the original in terms of its information content. By contrast, RNA replication is more like the analog copying of a cassette tape or a photocopier, with each successive copy of a copy getting noisier or fuzzier. RNA replication ISN’T actually analog; it’s just that the copying process is more prone to errors than DNA copying is.
What this means is that RNA viruses change quickly to the point where most of the viral particles are not very infectious or not very virulent. Also, it means that if an RNA virus spreads, it will quickly evolve in different ways in different parts of the world, so it is unlikely to be genetically identical all over the world.
So what may have happened is an infectious clone of a nasty virulent frankenvirus was brewed up in a vat somewhere, and this was spread around the world by men in black. They spread a little here in Wuhan and a little there in Lombardy and a little over there in New York, and so on. These viral clone genome molecules/particles sickened the people who inhaled them, and they were reproduced in the cells of infected people, but most of the daughter viral particles were a good deal less infectious and after a relatively few rounds of less-than-high-fidelity reproduction, the decedents were no long infectious at all and so the frankenvirus fizzled out.
I can’t vouch for any of this as I’m not a virologist, and in any case it’s a hypothesis that needs to be tested against reality, not a claim to certainty.
J.J. thinks the organizers arranged for two groups of people to argue over whether the virus was natural (from bats) or manmade (from a lab leak) so that just about everybody would be drawn into the assumption that, whatever its origins, there was a SARS-Cov-2 virus, and so they would never question its existence, when in reality there was no such virus capable of causing a worldwide pandemic and reproducing with high fidelity for over three years.

I have specifically introduced J.J. Couey’s ideas and opinions because I think they are worth entertaining—not necessarily over tea and cumber sandwiches—but worth considering.
Why? Because we don’t know the essentials of what’s been going on with Covid-19. Some of us have worked out that we’ve been lied to and gaslit and coerced and brainwashed and bamboozled, and others of us remain blissfully ignorant that we’ve suffered any such abuse. But all of us, whether aware or unaware of the lying, etc., lack a full grasp of what has been and is going on with Covid-19. In short, we are all under a spell to some extent. And I think it is in our own best interests to break free of this spell.
In addition to teaching us some of the basics of virology, immunology and epidemiology, and analyzing what a lot of public intellectuals have been saying about the pandemic, J.J. Couey offers us some clues and some advice about how to break the spell and extract ourselves from the bamboozle. As a consumer of news, current events, reportage and the like, one has a choice of adopting a stance of trusting or distrusting the various pieces of information presented to one. On top of that, one may be gullible, credulous, wary, suspicious, skeptical or cynical by nature or habit.

You and I have probably grown cynical to the point of being jaded (or jaded to the point of being cynical), while Norman, Keith Mike are delightfully and refreshingly trusting of at least certain strands of officialdom and mass media. So of course they seem naive from our jaundiced perspective.
Perhaps it would be useful to explore the question of how far the general public would be wise to trust and go along with officialdom and mass media, particularly in the present age in which we are increasingly subject to both crude and subtle mind control and subliminal fascism?
Mike summed this up nicely when he wrote those immortal words: “There is no harm in getting vaccinated in order to fit in with the governmental views and be able to get around more easily than the unvaccinated.”
Do the respective benefits and costs of compliance and acquiescence outweigh those of defiance and resistance? This is something each individual has to decide for themselves.

I don’t have a problem about reading or viewing “contaminated” material. It’s a very long time since I believed everything I was told. If we don’t want to be deceived, we need to run other people’s claims against our own verification software, but we also need to keep that software updated.
The other day I was reading something scary about chemtrails and all the poisons that were being showered down upon us. The writer had engaged my interest and emotions, and then they came up with a list of the poisons that were being sprayed, It included heavy metals, fluoride, raw sludge (and I nodded acceptingly). And then aluminum (I nodded again), magnesium (big ?), and lastly calcium (even bigger ?). Yes, the last two are chemicals, they are elements, they have sciency names. But neither is toxic and both are essential to human life. So by adding them to the list, the writer outed themself as a BS artist and/or a scientific ignoramus. If he’d kept that list to actual toxins, we might have thought he was clever, or at least sincere.

So NATO keeps opening the door to Ukraine, while constantly pulling it shut, and Ukraine has been left in the worst of all possible worlds. NATO has long said Ukraine will join – a blood-red line for the Russians – but never follows through on it, leaving Ukraine both imperilled and undefended.
NATO’s communiqué this week, written amid a conflict that it helped to stoke, stressed that ‘NATO does not seek confrontation and poses no threat to Russia’ – and that it will ‘seek stability and predictability in the Euro-Atlantic area and between NATO and Russia’. But if NATO is seeking ‘stability and predictability’, it’s not doing a very good job. For all the talk of NATO expansionism representing some grand American masterplan, the communiqué reveals the approach to be blundering and incoherent, but no less dangerous for it.
This geopolitical cluelessness is a product of NATO’s reckless drive to expand after the end of the Cold War. This has dragged it into conflicts it has neither the will nor wherewithal to fight. And it has pulled it towards nations to which it can’t commit itself. Mired in a world that its own expansion has helped to destabilise, NATO is now inherently incoherent. As Ukraine is discovering to its cost.
This moment has been a long time in the making.
From its formation in 1949 up until the disintegration of the USSR, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was defined by the Cold War. It served an explicitly anti-Communist purpose, and it was limited by the geopolitical realities of the Cold War order. Indeed, its make-up remained pretty much unchanged throughout this period – only one member, Spain, joined between 1955 and 1991, taking the membership total to 16.
The end of the Cold War completely disoriented NATO, depriving it of both purpose and geopolitical boundaries. An alliance established for defensive, anti-Soviet ends was transformed during the 1990s into a vague vehicle for the promotion of Western ‘values’ and interests. It wanted to expand, enlarge, bring others into the Western fold. Of its current 31 members, 15 were added after 1991.
It expanded ever eastwards, towards Russia. First the former Warsaw Pact nations joined, followed by the former Soviet republics. At every stage, this process of expansion was antagonising Russia, intensifying the national chauvinism and militarism of its increasingly insecure ruling clique. In a grim irony, NATO expansion almost started to justify itself – by creating a Russian threat on NATO’s increasingly militarised eastern borders.
Ukraine was always going to expose the world-historical folly of NATO expansion. Indeed, Russian and Western diplomats warned, from the collapse of the USSR onwards, that Ukraine becoming part of NATO would provoke Russia. But that didn’t stop successive Western leaders from continuously flirting with the prospect, as part of NATO’s new expansive purpose. As early as 1994, NATO concluded a framework agreement with Ukraine, in the shape of the Partnership for Peace initiative. At the Bucharest summit in 2008, NATO explicitly declared, at the urging of then US president George W Bush, that Ukraine and Georgia would become members. A few weeks later, in an ominous sign of what was to come for Ukraine, Putin launched an invasion of Georgia.
Yet while NATO has spent nearly 30 years dangling the prospect of membership in front of Ukraine, dragging it towards the West and antagonising Russia, nothing has ever come of it. NATO may have felt impelled by its expansionist logic to flirt with expanding into Ukraine, but it has always baulked at the potential consequences – especially after Moscow showed its willingness to retaliate by annexing Crimea in 2014. And so the prospect of membership has always been on the table for Ukraine. But the table has always been out of reach.
NATO has never really been serious about Ukraine. It was still playing this game on the eve of Russia’s invasion, with secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg urging Ukraine to undertake myriad reforms before admission could be considered. And it is still doing the same thing now, while Ukrainians are fighting for their lives – and their nation’s very existence.
NATO’s incoherence remains a serious problem. It generates the conditions for conflict, yet it lacks the purpose and authority to impose order. Putin and the Russian elites are ultimately responsible [*] for their barbaric invasion of Ukraine, but the role NATO expansion has played in stoking – and providing a pretext for – this conflict cannot be ignored.

Clearly in the real world states are motivated by security as well as by ‘sovereignty’ which is a made up concept that is often violated by NATO for much less grave ‘reasons of state’ than the security of the metropole; Russia’s response to NATO’s expansion to its borders was entirely predictable and indeed sought.]
Before Russia’s invasion, NATO was effectively provoking a war it didn’t want to fight. Now, it is helping Ukraine to fight for a future it refuses to commit to. Before this week’s summit, Joe Biden said that some ‘Israel-style’ security arrangements might be available for Ukraine ‘if’ there is a peace agreement with Russia. The ‘if’ was telling. It seems NATO’s main player won’t even guarantee vague security arrangements for Ukraine.
Of course, not all NATO members are of the same mind. By all accounts, the UK, Poland and now France want to bring Ukraine into NATO as soon as possible. The US and Germany, however, are far more reluctant. Both are said to be (understandably) fearful of being drawn into a future conflict with a nuclear-armed superpower – hence the US-led talk of more informal security arrangements for Ukraine. If only they’d realised this all those years ago. This internal disunity only makes NATO more incoherent, making it even more of a destabilising force.
Despite the abundant evidence to the contrary, some Western pundits have claimed that Ukraine obtaining NATO membership is the only way of securing the peace. Given the role NATO has played in fuelling conflict over the past three decades, that seems more than a little fanciful. If there is to be a lasting peace, it needs to be achieved outside of NATO. For Ukraine, it has always been nothing but trouble.

Abstract
Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), known in the past as “Microwave syndrome”, is a clinical syndrome characterized by the presence of a wide spectrum of non-specific multiple organ symptoms, typically including central nervous system symptoms, that occur following the patient’s acute or chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields in the environment or in occupational settings. Numerous studies have shown biological effects at the cellular level of electromagnetic fields (EMF) at magnetic (ELF) and radio-frequency (RF) frequencies in extremely low intensities. Many of the mechanisms described for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) apply with modification to EHS. Repeated exposures result in sensitization and consequent enhancement of response. Many hypersensitive patients appear to have impaired detoxification systems that become overloaded by excessive oxidative stress. EMF can induce changes in calcium signaling cascades, significant activation of free radical processes and overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in living cells as well as altered neurological and cognitive functions and disruption of the blood-brain barrier. Magnetite crystals absorbed from combustion air pollution could have an important role in brain effects of EMF. Autonomic nervous system effects of EMF could also be expressed as symptoms in the cardiovascular system. Other common effects of EMF include effects on skin, microvasculature, immune and hematologic systems. It is concluded that the mechanisms underlying the symptoms of EHS are biologically plausible and that many organic physiologic responses occur following EMF exposure. Patients can have neurologic, neuro-hormonal and neuro-psychiatric symptoms following exposure to EMF as a consequence of neural damage and over-sensitized neural responses. More relevant diagnostic tests for EHS should be developed. Exposure limits should be lowered to safeguard against biologic effects of EMF. Spread of local and global wireless networks should be decreased, and safer wired networks should be used instead of wireless, to protect susceptible members of the public. Public places should be made accessible for electrohypersensitive individuals.

Treatment
Treatment for lupus depends on your signs and symptoms. Determining whether you should be treated and what medications to use requires a careful discussion of the benefits and risks with your doctor.
As your signs and symptoms flare and subside, you and your doctor may find that you’ll need to change medications or dosages. The medications most commonly used to control lupus include:
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as naproxen sodium (Aleve) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others), may be used to treat pain, swelling and fever associated with lupus. Antimalarial drugs. Medications commonly used to treat malaria, such as hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), affect the immune system and can help decrease the risk of lupus flares. Side effects can include stomach upset and, very rarely, damage to the retina of the eye. Regular eye exams are recommended when taking these medications.
Corticosteroids. Prednisone and other types of corticosteroids can counter the inflammation of lupus. High doses of steroids such as methylprednisolone (Medrol) are often used to control serious disease that involves the kidneys and brain. Side effects include weight gain, easy bruising, thinning bones, high blood pressure, diabetes and increased risk of infection. The risk of side effects increases with higher doses and longer term therapy.
Immunosuppressants. Drugs that suppress the immune system may be helpful in serious cases of lupus. Examples include azathioprine (Imuran, Azasan), mycophenolate (Cellcept), methotrexate (Trexall, Xatmep, others), cyclosporine (Sandimmune, Neoral, Gengraf) and leflunomide (Arava). Potential side effects may include an increased risk of infection, liver damage, decreased fertility and an increased risk of cancer.

This was news to me, actually. Residual heat and the ongoing release of gravitational energy are keeping the core warm. I guess it’s pretty well insulated down there.

I can’t say why, but the Earth itself seems different, & plants are behaving oddly. The idea of a spring plume, and energy changing from the core, really caught my attention.

On the plant subject I was reading over at Arthur Firstenberg’s substack in a comment section concerning EMF, where a long time Rose grower was seeing DNA damage she’s never seen before. Buds fused together like Siamese twins kind of stuff. We’ve had strange cycles of rodents these last few years. One year almost none, the next (this one) a massive proliferation. I have a friend living on a cherry orchard in Northern Michigan in a WiFi free zone and he’s got more insects, critters and birds than ever. We’re thinking that perhaps it’s like an oasis for them. Kind of like the few surviving seabirds choosing new islands further away from the towers on the next year of their attempt to breed, as described by Firstenberg recently.
I’m trying to fathom both things going on at the same time; wide-ranging effects of mantle plumes coming from below, on top of a variety of EMF related damages to life on the surface.

So in about 2 years the average interest rate on US Treasury debt will be clocking at ever increasing blended interest rates?
The question is, do you continue to borrow short term hoping to keep your head above water with the cumulative rising interest rates, hoping that soon interest rates will drop and you can resume borrowing at lower rates and for longer terms?
Or do you borrow short term only at ever higher rates, knowing that at lower interest rates, no one will want to buy the dollars, and the dollar hyperinflation goes supernova?

Howdy Hubbs, years ago I used to comment on David’s videos and turned him on to the work of Miles Mathis regarding planetary alignments, especially that of Jupiter, and Mathis’ photon charge-channeling ideas. Shortly thereafter he began integrating these into his analysis, but stuck with the GSM charts he’d been showing for so long. Miles has many papers on the subject. Here’s an excerpt from one updated recently. He’s got a monster ego, but I suppose that comes with the territory he inhabits.
“Miles here again. My reader is of course correct. And notice that the match went wildly off after June 2021. As I have shown you, that is roughly when the US Air Force took over sunspot counts here, and we can see they must have put in calls all over the world, including to Cagnotti in Italy. This is more proof international military intelligence took over sunspot counts, for the express purpose of making it look like my predictions going back to 2014 were failing. They couldn’t let it be seen that I was right when all the experts were wrong, so their only choice was to fake all data after the big rise at that time.

My impression is that prisons in the US have not been doing a good job of reporting Covid cases and deaths. Maybe other countries have been looking at this.
Nursing homes certainly has been a big area for deaths from covid. A person would think that prisons would be, as well.
My brother who lives about 30 miles from Portland used to go riding on his motorcycle through the tent cities. He noted that none of the homeless seemed to die from COVID despite not being vaxxed. That was the observation that led him to conclude that COVID was a hoax.

Not data, but my son works at a small state run facility for women. He felt it was generally one of the safer places to work because there was minimal exposure to general public and new inmates were quarantined for 3-7 days before adding to prison population. He is not vaxxed and has not had covid.

One report from Sankei News said that there are over 700 fuel assemblies stored in one pool at Fukushima. If they all caught fire, radioactive particles—including those lasting for as long as a decade—would be released into the air and eventually contaminate the land or, worse, be inhaled by people. “To me, the spent fuel is scarier. All those spent fuel assemblies are still extremely radioactive,” Dalnoki-Veress says.
It has been known for more than two decades that, in case of a loss of water in the pool, convective air cooling would be relatively ineffective in such a “dense-packed” pool. Spent fuel recently discharged from a reactor could heat up relatively rapidly to temperatures at which the zircaloy fuel cladding could catch fire and the fuel’s volatile fission product, including 30-year half-life Cs, would be released. The fire could well spread to older spent fuel. The long-term land-contamination consequences of such an event could be significantly worse than those from Chernobyl.

The Chernobyl accident was relatively minor, involved no spent fuel ponds, and was controlled by pouring cement onto the reactor. This was breaking down so a few years back they re-entombed.

I haven’t heard about this ozone elimination theory before, but it certainly shows considerable imagination.
Fortunately, my ongoing worry about the possibility of being fried by a nova leaves me with no time or energy to worry about uncontrolled nuclear meltdowns. But I find it interesting that Guy and Eddy share this particular interest, albeit for very different reasons.

This is, why I believe “gardening”, that means agriculture with intensive care, compost, intelligent rotations, irrigation, reduction of stones and terracing will be the future – not life like Hunter-Gatherers. What is more, the large steppe areas are missing, at least in Europe.

See too the books about Fukuoka’s work in Japan. He apparently produced as much food (tonnes per hectare) as orthodox (industrial) Japanese farmers, but on a sustainable basis, using hand labour. Or for what one can do at 59 degrees north instead of 30-35 N (cold and dry-ish, not warm and wet) see online videos by Richard Perkins, a Brit. who now farms in Sweden. He uses some fossil fuels but there’s no ploughing.
The information has been around for decades but only applied by a few percent, making it to me seem like ‘insurmountable opportunities’. The people who make up the industrial farming lobby (‘Big Ag’) and control decisions at the top of the hierarchy seem to have no idea that small-scale agriculture could also produce lots of food.

And, um, that ‘extreme heat’ explanation was a lie. A lie quickly and easily disproven by online sleuths. According to local weather reports, it was 82 degrees at the time of the concert. That is not extreme heat. That’s not even ‘heat.’
Why would they lie?
Pittsburgh Emergency Medical Services issued a press release saying, “EMS personnel working during the Ed Sheeran concert received 37 calls for service, with 17 transports to the hospital.” Thirty-seven calls for emergency services. “The transports were for heat-related issues, some falls, one seizure, and two cardiac arrests.”
One of the cardiac arrests was a paramedic. They don’t know what caused all the casualties.
